A strong predictor of who does extraordinary work is being terrible with everyday life; they get people’s names wrong, forget meetings, constantly lose things or don’t remember to eat because all their mental bandwidth is going elsewhere. We met a researcher with 87000+ unread emails and a passport that expired the day before an AI conference he was speaking at, and a founder who had worn pretty much the same outfit every day for 10yrs because choosing took up way too much mental effort. Maintaining a well run life is a part-time job hours-wise. For someone who is juggling a hard problem in their head 24-7, there is no spare capacity to run these background processes. Society treats this as a flaw to coach out (the command is “be more present”), but this level of absorption is necessary to solve a problem nobody else has.

To clarify, I don't believe Latin America's rightward swing is 100% caused by the demise of USAID, but I think it was a big factor and pushed it over the tipping point.

What do you all think the most consequential decision of the Trump era has been? I could see maybe the appointment of 3 Supreme Court justices, his anti-China gambit (Venezuela, Iran & tariffs), or possibly the Abraham accords or Immigration restrictions. But if you ask me... it has to be the termination of USAID. I mean just look at Latin America, it has swung incredibly to the right over the last year. And I think there's a lot more to come there & worldwide from this one decision to clamp down on NGOs.

Currently helping a startup I’m involved with raise its next round. I’ve introduced the CEO to several unicorn founders in his category who have all been extremely impressed with him and blown away by the growth. Several have asked to invest. However, most of the VCs I’ve pinged have been dismissive of the company. It is not AI after all. VCs always know best.
