Today I happened to pull from a basement bookcase a book by my favorite American novelist, the late Donald Westlake. It's a Dortmunder novel, Bad News, from 2001. And what an opening sentence: "John Dortmunder was a man on whom the sun shone only when he needed darkness."

@Zigmanfreud How does this end up for Swawell? He’s gotta go with the “I did send dick pics but didn’t rape anyone” defense.

I’ve outlined why there are legit reasons to be skeptical of this 8 year old allegation, but here’s what NO ONE will mention about the drugging: 1) A congressman up for reelection rapes someone in the way that is easiest to prove? 2) She’s incapacitated but she makes it to his hotel room? 3) Doesn’t the need for there to be a drugging go against the notion, seemingly very popular in the news media, that raping an adult woman is somehow rather easy for these dirtbags to get away with?
Eric Daugherty@EricLDaugh

🚨 BREAKING: Jaw-dropping moment as Rep. Eric Swalwell accuser SPILLS IT ALL on national TV "He r*ped me and he choked me." Omg. "While he was choking me I lost consciousness. I thought I died." "I believe he DRUGGED MY DRINK...I only had one glass of wine." "I did not consent to any s*xual activity." "He was married at the time and his wife was pregnant." "He said he needed to get paperwork from his hotel room. When I arrived to his hotel room I was already incapacitated, I couldn't move my arms or my body."

This is SO dead on… People wonder why someone like me (a conservative who loathed Chavez politically) is defending him. They presume it’s because I’m fine with rape 🤮, when it’s really because I fear a society where such claims can be blindly accepted with no real evidence. 😡
Stephen Martin-Pinto@StephenMPinto

The fact that we are memory-holing Cesar Chavez as fast as we are in real time with such scant evidence should be very concerning to us all.

@CoreyClayton @3four3 That’s not the point. They don’t collectively bargain. And the reason they don’t is there is a robust open market for player wages. This allows for more fluid player movement, increased player rights (players decide who they work for. Can’t be traded for instance).

Regarding USL Championship and Player's Union CBA Negotiations and all the shit that comes with it ... This is yet another example of the type of crap that doesn't happen in open ecosystems (pro/rel). In open ecosystems: * Players/workers are able to find their true market value. * Clubs/businesses are incentivized to maximally invest/spend due to market forces (whether it be players, staff, surrounding infrastructure, etc ...). If they don't, eventually, they'll be relegated. If you don't understand these things, you don't understand fundamental economic principles - to say nothing about how football works.

How the hell is Massie (who I used to love) going to release the names on a list that has never existed and which he admits he doesn’t even have?! This is like if Trump threatened to defeat our enemies by using the power of invisibility that he invented himself the night before!
Shadow of Ezra@ShadowofEzra

Rep. Thomas Massie says he’s ready to use the nuclear option if the DOJ refuses to unredact the names of Epstein’s clients. He warns he will simply start reading Epstein’s client names publicly if Pam Bondi’s Department of Justice does not release them. “If the victims want to give them to me, I’ve expressed that I’m willing to do that.”

@DMAC_LA Bro, there are only 2 starters that were developed by the Dodgers. And no starting pitching. 2 players, it's all money at this point. Stop acting like the Dodgers developed the last 2 teams, it's been Ohtani and Freeman

This is so beyond stupid. The Dodgers $8.35 billion TV deal is a major advantage, but the truth is that contract was 100% earned. Thank Walter O'Malley for having the vision to move the Dodgers to the second largest market in America. Thank Vin Scully for being the greatest sports broadcaster to ever live. Thank Sandy Koufax, Tommy Lasorda, Fernando Valenzuela, and so many other Dodgers that captured the imagination of millions and millions of fans. Most of all thank a dedicated fanbase that fell in love with a team and has passionately supported them. That deal wasn't a hand out. The Dodgers earned every single penny of that deal.

Regarding the case that coaches in MLS don't get developed (e.g. Nancy). It's not complicated. When parity is enforced and all teams are basically the same with no huge disparities, a coach is practically rendered inconsequential. When there is NO PARITY (such as in the rest of the world), coaches are forced to learn and have enormous dynamic range. There is HUGE tactical diversity, by necessity. The coach of Levante has to rack his brain when confronted with Real Madrid, which is different than a mid table team which is different than a relegation-threatened team. Every week it's totally different chess games. In MLS, it's merely the spinning of a roulette wheel. The dumbest coach can win, and the best coach can lose. It doesn't matter. Not to mention over half the table makes the playoffs (considered "success"), no relegation, a SOFT docile fanbase, and a business model that doesn't depend on winning or sporting excellence, making weekly regular season games practically inconsequential. Guys, in MLS more than anywhere else BY FAR, the coach is rendered practically irrelevant. That's what happens with enforced parity and a truly inconsequential "competition". x.com/FabrizioRomano…

@EinSchwarzwelt Tells us what we already knew which is that only around a handful of MLS clubs are seriously trying to compete while the rest don't face urgency because there is no consequence to defeat unless you're one of the handful in "win now mode".

Wilfried Nancy flaming out at Celtic and being sacked after a month of horrendous results (while your British predecessor got results w/ the same squad) tells you everything you need to know about coaches from MLS adapting to an actual sporting environment of accountability.
