Design is compression. Art is expansion.

@scspeier I don't disagree with any of that. I still have no idea how this is relevant to sharing speculative or killed client work in a public setting.

You can explore the outer boundaries of an idea as a means to honing in on the correct solution. Sometimes the outcomes of those areas are more appealing to you, the operator, than to the product itself, the stakeholder, the client, or even the solution. It’s not being “bad at your job” to push outward and to be proud in those moments. To some, the process is more important than the product.

@NateGio Also, I only designed the @SierraPlatform logo and the basic look and feel. @bakkenbaeck deserves a ton of credit for building out the website and brand in the early days, and now internally @wwayneee and others have been pushing it even further.

@NateGio Oh trust me, I know that clients are not always willing. My portfolio is like the tip of an iceberg. There is SO MUCH killed work under the water. It's painful, but I believe that a designer's job is to take the work all the way from concept to shipping. Managing that is the job!

@scspeier Can you elaborate? I have no idea what this means in this context...

@thefinnmckenty @jdreeves I did say it was my opinion. I think there is an appropriate way to share experiments and self-initiated projects. It's when you connect it to and existing entity, and try to draft off their reputation for your own gain that I find it problematic.

@benbarry At least they gave OpenAI a proper Illuminati inspired logo treatment.

@mikesmith187 @johnpalmer I got in a big argument with @FSockwell about this issue ~15 years ago, and it soured our friendship. I'm still bummed about that, because I have so much respect for Felix and his work. ❤️

@mikesmith187 @johnpalmer FWIW, I'm not trying to pick on him specifically. I see this kind of thing a lot in our industry, and it's always bugged me. It was just the post that happened to triggered the cantankerous old designer in me.

@mikesmith187 @johnpalmer I also totally get the frustration with regards to killed work. I've got mountains of it! I think Charles Anderson's approach of repurposing killed or experimental work for self-initiated projects is the way to go. I have lots of thoughts about this.

@marcomezzavilla Yeah, I said another reply that students and very recent grads get a pass on this. IMO, once you have some real projects under your belt, sharing speculative client work and rejected concepts should cease.

1. completely agree. I always find sharing real work is stronger. Beyond your point of convincing the client, it's also the fact you're winning work 2. I just went down a rabbithole of your work. Incredible to see so much of the world I interact with being designed by you. Beautiful work.

@benbarry huge wiff on this one. yes you are technically correct on the latter point but sharing ideas and concepts, especially when continuing a train of thought you have established previously, is just social behavior

@mamkindesigner I believe there is a way to do this, without associating such work with a real entity. By associating it with a real entity you're trying to draft off of the credibility of that entity. It's lazy and unprofessional. Here is an example of an experiment: benbarry.com/experiment-qua…

@benbarry I don't think it has anything to do with being good or bad at your job. Sharing unused / rejected concepts is purely about signaling taste. You share ideas and visuals you wish existed so the people who resonate with that vision can find you.

@johnpalmer Experiments are totally fine, but don't think they should be presented as work for a real entity. Let them be their own thing. Students and very recent graduates get a pass, but otherwise I think this is amateur behavior.

@benbarry Plenty of used work for you to check out including two companies that OpenAI paid hundreds of millions of dollars to acquire. These were never pitched or shown to anyone which is why they say “imaginary.”

I often rely heavily on intuition. Most of the work I do is highly subjective. There are many valid ways to solve most design problems, and it's impossible to validate which path is best. To survive as a designer, you must develop your taste to not be paralyzed by indecision.

If you have a EDR/HDR display, try this little mesh gradient Playbit demo on desktop in Chrome playbit.app/demo/ (only works in chrome and safari dev preview since we use async wasm) Built with our new wide-gamut webgpu renderer, shipping in a few weeks
