@benihime9054 The average Bleach character has more cases for swordsmanship than a Naruto character. You look at say Sasuke vs Madara, and all we see is him swinging his sword around and not hitting anything. Meanwhile, Ichigo vs Byakuya, we see Ichigo doing Kenjutsu and fighting an Iaijutsu

This is one of the biggest mysteries in Bleach, but the story gives us enough clues to make an educated interpretation. Mimihagi didn't seem to choose Ukitake because he was the strongest. It chose him because he was dying. Ukitake was born with a terminal lung disease and was expected to die as a child. His parents prayed to Mimihagi, the Right Arm of the Soul King, which was worshipped in the eastern Rukongai as a local deity. Mimihagi answered that prayer by replacing Ukitake's failing lungs and keeping him alive. So why Ukitake specifically? He was at the boundary between life and death. Mimihagi governs "stagnation", it stops things from progressing. Ukitake's death was literally halted. His body became a perfect vessel. After accepting Mimihagi, Ukitake spent centuries living with part of the Soul King inside him without rejecting it. His selfless nature matched Mimihagi's role. Ukitake devoted his entire life to protecting others, making him the ideal person to carry the burden when the Soul King fell. The deeper question is whether Mimihagi actively selected Ukitake or simply answered a sincere prayer from parents desperate to save their child. The manga never gives a definitive answer, leaving it open to interpretation. My own theory is that Mimihagi wasn't searching for "the strongest soul" at all, it was searching for someone whose fate had already stopped. A child who should have died but could instead become its vessel. That makes Ukitake less of a random choice and more of the only person whose existence perfectly aligned with Mimihagi's power over stagnation. In that sense, Ukitake wasn't chosen despite his illness he may have been chosen because of it.
