A lot of people are surprised to learn that when you fly, the pilots and controllers are just talking to each other over walkie talkies and everybody can hear everything. Also, that RJ comment was a sick burn.
CBS News@CBSNews

Two pilots appeared to make meowing noises and dog barks as they communicated with each other before air traffic control at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport called them out on Sunday. "You guys, you need to be professional," an air traffic controller is heard saying.

This is cool! @FlyAirNZ just put *bunk beds* on a plane. I got a first look at the SkyNest, and it's unlike anything I've ever seen in economy class. Here's everything you need to know 🧵 (1/7)

This acquisition is mostly about spectrum for a future consumer and direct-to-phone service. If Amazon wants to offer direct-to-device coverage, Globalstar's spectrum licenses help a lot. Globalstar's satellite constellation is small by today's standards.... just 24 satellites designed to accommodate low-data comms like text messaging. They have a contract with Apple to provide 85% of the capacity from those satellites for Apple's emergency texting features. Unclear if that carries over to Amazon.

BREAKING: Amazon is acquiring @Globalstar to bring direct-to-device (D2D) satellite connectivity to @Amazonleo, and has signed an agreement with @Apple to power satellite services for iPhone and Apple Watch. We’ll begin launching Leo D2D services in 2028, ensuring your phone will stay connected even when you're outside of cellular range. The next-gen system will also mean faster speeds, better performance, and seamless integration with our Leo broadband constellation, and will power satellite services for supported iPhone and Apple Watch models, allowing users to text emergency services, message friends and family, request roadside assistance, and more. Keeping customers connected no matter where in the world they are. ⬇️

Amazon now has ~250 satellites compared to Starlink's ~10,000. They've been sending up satellites on SpaceX and ULA rockets and are (as of now) planning to have 3,236 in orbit by 2029. I wouldn't be surprised if that last number goes up though.

Introducing the Amazon Leo Aviation Antenna. Delivering speeds up to 1 Gbps downlink and 400 Mbps uplink from a single antenna – it's simple enough to install in a single day, and powerful enough to support an entire cabin full of streaming, browsing, working and more from gate to gate. spr.ly/6011B626IR

@VictorPontis United got serious about premium customers, placed orders for ~700 new airplanes (a lot), upgraded all their technology, doubled down on hubs like Chicago, improved their marketing, and finally finished their 2012 Continental merger integration

@benjaminsfrank Say what the changes are! Don’t rely on me knowing what changed since then. I want to learn about airplanes but I don’t have that much background knowledge. Is Delta no longer untouchable?

@VictorPontis The old name was better imo (Kuiper) but marketing people thought it was hard to pronounce.

@VictorPontis In a few years, the service will be as good as Starlink. Initially it’ll be a bit spotty.

@bscholl What should we do when there are too many Overtures and we reach capacity ceiling on ADS-B?

If you buy the MacBook Neo you have to get the one with the cfm LEAP. If you get the PW1000G Neo it has reliability issues that aren’t worth the increased power efficiency. Thank me later.

@tysonweihs Have you checked out Enhanced Radar / ATC.com? They are doing voice models specifically for ATC. If you go over the radio, I'm not sure there is any gatekeeper. But why do you need voice for the handoff at all?

Now we can give ATC a supersuit that lets them hand off hand-offs to AI-driven comms. Detect handoff needed. Deliver handoff. Next sector's AI monitors the check-in. Give controllers back minutes, if not hours of mundane comms per day. Ship it. What vendors are involved in this that are the gate keepers? x.com/i/trending/201…
