Instead of studying it and writing a dissertation on it, could you build a business / school instead and test your beliefs in the crucible of the market, refining your understanding based on real world customer feedback? Huge fan of what you write about and do in the classroom - and those making the biggest impact in education right now simply do the thing and drive results. It’s insanely hard, but they are driving generational change. Biggest mistakes in my life have occurred when I thought and wrote instead of taking action on what I knew to be true.

Met with my doctoral advisor to discuss my dissertation topic. He asked, “What problem in education do you want to solve?” I said: “Students should be able to move through curriculum at their own pace (with a required minimum).” He replied, “That’s not possible. It’s too expensive to individualize education. Why not focus on improving test scores or student engagement?” I said, “If you individualize instruction, those issues improve naturally.” (20 minutes later) He said, “I’m not sure I agree, but it’s clear you care deeply about this. I’ll approve it.”

Most of my free headspace is spent marveling at the singular point in human history we sit upon: > the space economy is on the verge of being blasted open > thinking machines are nearly here > huge strides in biology (Reta, personalized medicine, genetic therapy) will materially extend healthspan > higher ed is in crunch time and education freedom (combined with employer driven credentialing) is about to unleash a Cambrian explosion of new learning approaches > abundant, nearly unlimited energy (which accelerates much of the above) is within our grasp The uncertainty and potential is marvelously invigorating. It could go wrong at so many turns. If we get it right, reality will shift beyond our wildest dreams. History is just getting started. And we get to be part of it.

The Presidential Unit Citation is rare and only given to units displaying “extraordinary heroism in action against an armed enemy” equivalent to that of a Navy Cross. I saw this award in the routing chain and was blown away by what they accomplished. Well deserved and welcome home. You did your nation proud.
