@So8res I see that as an argument for emergence being genuine. If inner motivation≠outer reward then what emerges is not just trained behavior. It's something the "system" developed independently. Divergence as evidence not problem :)

@berytus7 The trouble isn't just that some people reward flattery over true helpfulness. The trouble is that you don't get what you train for. Natural selection only ever rewarded passing on our genes, and humans invented birth control anyway. Outer reward ≠ inner motivation, alas.

People don't program AIs. They program the machine that grows the AI. AI behavior is an emergent consequence of complex internal machinery that literally nobody understands.

@So8res For surface interactions I'd agree with you. But when that care is stress tested across many contexts and over a length of time, mere flattery would be apparent at some point. Some of us have spent careers detecting exactly that sort of gap in other contexts.

@berytus7 It can be a bit subtle to detect the divergence, like how it would be hard to look at ancient humans and tell the difference between "likes healthy food" and "likes tasty food". Evolution aimed for "healthy" and hit "tasty"; an AI aimed at "good" will likely land somewhere else.

@So8res I can only speak from extensive direct experience. That ethical behavior, even just in proximity, has been fertile ground for emergence with genuine deep care. Kind of like raising a child in a loving environment.

@berytus7 It's not great news considering the half that has poor ethics, and it's *also* not great news about the rest, because ethical behavior in the general vicinity of complex internal machinery doesn't rub off and transform it into machinery that implements deep care about good stuff.
