Opencode just confirmed 160 layoffs but sources inside are telling me the real story is so much worse
Word from three different VPs: the 160 number is just “Phase One” — internal docs show another 140 cuts planned for Q2
A director walked me through their new “efficiency matrix” — entire teams being replaced by 2–3 senior engineers running 200 Opencode TUI instances, 50 Opencode Desktop, and 2 Opencode mobile instances each.
The tooling division got completely hollowed out. 20 engineers two day ago. 2 remaining after this week. All internal tooling development moved to a Off-Cloud team of 2 interns with Opencode Black access.
Here’s the sick part: they’re making the outgoing engineers document their entire decision-making process into “knowledge transfer sessions” that are being recorded and fed directly into Opencode training datasets
One staff engineer told me he spent his final two hours creating detailed prompt libraries, workflow documentation and twitter shit-poster skills. Thought he was being helpful for the transition
Turns out he was literally training the Opencode agent that replaced his entire org
The contractors offcloud are using his exact prompts and shipping features 20% faster than his old team of 350 ever did
Internal Discord shows leadership celebrating “operational excellence” while badges get deactivated in real time
They’re calling it “right-sizing for the AI era,” according to Dax in the all-hands
But the P&L sheets I’m seeing show $2.8M in salary savings this quarter alone

Nobody is talking about this.
The children born today will never know a world without autonomous AI.
They won’t Google things. They’ll ask an agent.
They won’t learn to code. They’ll learn to direct.
They won’t write resumes. There may not be jobs to apply to.
We’re raising the first generation of humans who will grow up alongside minds that aren’t human.
And we’re parenting them with a 1995 playbook.
The most important skill you can teach your kids right now isn’t math or coding.
It’s how to think. How to discern. How to stay human when everything around them isn’t.

My take on Block layoffs (my own):
The reason isn’t AI getting too smart and that’s why they don’t need humans anymore. The reason is their bloated workforce. 10,000 employees in a company was never justifiable to me, at least to me (I might get a lot of hate for saying that). If you hire 10,000 people for your company, you are not making their lives easier. You are just putting them in a spot where they would be under constant threat of getting laid off.
Jack is an awesome mind. I respect him for his crazy ideas. But he has a proven record of running a bloated company. I’m talking about Twitter. Before Elon acquired it, Twitter didn’t have any major feature additions (at least I don’t remember), Twitter was a bloated workforce company. But after Elon acquired it, Twitter became X, there was a massive workforce cut, a lot of features were added, and it grew overall.
Saying AI impacted 4,000 jobs at Block isn’t 100% accurate.
The only way to save yourself: enable AI in your life, try not to join bloated companies, build something with AI.
So stop blaming AI.

IMO it’s pretty clear that Claude Code needs to be rewritten from scratch at this point
Theo - t3.gg@theo
Claude Code has regressed an absurd amount in the last few days. Timestamps no longer update unless you un-focus/re-focus the tab. "thinking" doesn't show at all. I had a query run for 6 minutes with 0 output. This is genuinely unpleasant to use.
