Marathon is cooked Paul Tassi (Forbes): "I can confirm Marathon's budget is over $200m. Likely over $250m. This does not include ongoing costs for maintenance or new content" >About two weeks ago, analyst firm Alinea estimated that Marathon had sold around 1.2 million copies across all platforms. I confirmed with my Bungie sources that was close to accurate. Marathon had previously hit #2 on the Steam revenue chart ahead of launch. >Also near-accurate is a 478K daily active user count in its first weekend, though that dropped to 345K more recently. That data is two weeks old, however. >As I previously reported, the majority of Marathon’s playerbase is on Steam, as confirmed by my sources. Alinea reports it as 70% >Marathon did not chart inside Steam’s top 10 at launch. It released with an 88,337 concurrent peak on its largest platform. That is a drop from the 143,621 peak during the free server slam (the game is now $40). >Since launch just over a month ago, those peaks have dropped by 68%, where the game most recently hit a 27,670 peak at the time of this writing. >Marathon is now the 106th most-played game on Xbox. I do not have full PS5 data, though it did chart on its top 10 list at launch. Marathon is 78th in daily active users on Steam at the time of this writing, 82nd in top sellers.
Pirat_Nation 🔴@Pirat_Nation

Marathon had a development budget exceeding $200 million and likely over $250 million per Forbes. One month after launch, the multiplatform title has sold around 1.2 million units with Steam accounting for 70% of players,

I've literally said on multiple separate occasions that I'd personally go out of my way and do everything in my power to help market a 3rd party Dreamcast controller should someone actually step up and go the extra mile to correct the most egregious (and only major) mistake Sega ever made with the Dreamcast: the lack of a second analog stick on its controllers. So here we are... Thank you, @YTNaiAdventure for actually stepping up and giving us what we've always asked for! I will be supporting your product, and I hope everyone else will do the same! Just a brief recap on the second analog stick for Sega Dreamcast controllers: 1) Dual analogs were always supported by the Maple spec since day 1. Sega's fuck-up would've inevitably been fixed with later controller revisions, had it stayed in the 6th gen race. 2) Some games were released with dual analog support either in anticipation for such a controller or for supporting the "PantherDC" stick which advertised its twin axes as two analog sticks. Quake 3 Arena, and IIRC Unreal Tournament(?) were two such games. 3) The KallistiOS indie/homebrew SDK has always had support for dual analog sticks, and many of our homebrew releases, such as Grand Theft Auto 3/VC and Doom 64 already have full support for both axes.

I made a planning mistake and it ended up making more sense to go wait at the school to pick up my son 35 minutes early rather than five minutes late like usual. I’ve discovered that a very large number of parents are insane. There was already multiple cars waiting when I arrived and many here 20+ minutes early. Why do this? What are you accomplishing?!

@pebtrocious Why are you against kids on social media? Grandma is on Facebook. Why shouldn't the grandkids be there? They can like eachothers' photos, keep in touch, etc. This isn't about the kids of course. It's about identifying every individual on the internet, monitoring them.

When I was young and stupid, I asked my WOS teacher (Polish civics class): “If alcohol is so harmful, why doesn’t the government just raise taxes on it really high? People would drink less, and the state would collect more money.” My teacher answered: “Because if the price gets too high, people don’t stop drinking, they just find workarounds. They buy from the gray or black market instead. That means the government loses tax revenue, and far worse: unregulated bootleg alcohol isn’t checked for quality or safety, so you get more poisonings from methanol and other contaminants.” That single conversation taught me more about unintended consequences and human incentives than 90 % of today’s politicians seem to understand when they push for mandatory ID verification and social media bans. People respond to incentives. Raise the barriers high enough and demand doesn’t vanish... it simply shifts underground, often into places that are harder to monitor, less safe. The policy looks good on paper, but the real-world result is usually the opposite of what was intended. (It is already happening in Australia btw) Different issue, same fundamental pattern If you really care about the kids you should stop the digital ID and age verification, and I say this even tho I'm against kids being on social media

Controlled Access Zone puzzle (Dam Battlegrounds) Requires 4 players + one Motor (bring your own if possible). 1. Go to the Controlled Access Zone. 2. Find a battery to unlock the first room. 3. Each player stands at one of the four buttons. 4. Press all four buttons at the exact same time → middle door opens. 5. Attach the Motor to open the final door. Inside is some of the best loot in the game right now. Enjoy!

Men have a strong biological sex drive. The male body continuously produces sperm, and testosterone fuels frequent sexual desire. For men, sex is not just a want but a strong physical urge tied to hormones, stress relief, bonding, and emotional well-being. Ignoring that reality create serious frustration inside a marriage. It’s common sense. Historically, women recognized that men and women experience sexual desire differently. Men tend to have a more steady physical drive, while women’s desire is more affected by emotions, stress, hormones, and relationship quality. Because of these differences, so many women accepted things like mistresses or prostitution, not always out of disrespect for women, but as a way they believed they were managing mismatched sex drives within marriage. Why push for monogamy if you cannot fuck your husbands?

At the gym today I was forced to eavesdrop on a conversation (I don’t listen to music during workouts) between a morbidly obese woman and her female personal trainer. I applaud her for working out; but the conversation gave me an insight into her mind as well. The obese woman talked loudly non stop the whole entire time about food. What her favourite foods were, what she was trying to cut out, what she was planning to eat in the future, what her dad used to bring home from work when she was little. No mention of kids, hobbies, interests, NOTHING. Just hyper fixation on food. Gluttony is one heck of a disease and arguably something these people continue to struggle with long after weight has been lost and goals have been hit. I think it’s probably similar to drug addiction in a way.

Everyone is missing the real story here. This tweet frames Gates selling Microsoft shares as a mistake. The math says otherwise. Gates started with 44.9% of Microsoft in 1986. If he’d held every share, sure, he might be worth north of a trillion dollars on paper. But that analysis ignores what actually happened with the money that left Microsoft. The Gates Foundation has given away over $100 billion. That money funded Gavi, which has saved an estimated 17 million lives. It helped cut annual child mortality from 10 million to 5 million. It nearly eradicated polio. Gates just committed another $200 billion over the next 20 years. And Buffett? The person this tweet implies gave “bad advice” by recommending diversification? He’s donated $47.9 billion to the Gates Foundation. The advice wasn’t “diversify into index funds for personal wealth preservation.” It was “diversify so you can fund the largest philanthropic operation in human history.” The counterfactual also ignores market reality. A single person holding 45% of a $3.8 trillion company creates enormous overhang. Every share sale would move markets. The liquidity doesn’t exist to actually realize that wealth. Paper trillions aren’t spendable trillions. But here’s what this framing really reveals: we’ve optimized for “world’s richest person” as the default success metric. Gates explicitly rejected that game. He’s said he wants to die with less than $100 billion precisely because hoarding wealth while children die of preventable diseases seemed absurd to him. The question isn’t “what if Gates had held?” The question is “what would we lose if he had?” The answer is millions of people who are alive today.
Bitcoin Teddy@Bitcoin_Teddy

Fun fact: if Bill Gates hadn’t listened to Warren Buffett and hadn’t sold his Microsoft shares to diversify, he would be the world’s first trillionaire, worth twice as much as Elon. What do we learn from this story?

Vesalius the great doctor was treating war casualties. The standard treatment for bullet wounds was to pour boiling oil into the hole. The usual result was that the victim died. But hey, he’d been shot. After one heated battle in Flanders, Vesalius ran out of boiling oil. He sadly made a concoction of herbs and balm (and cooked puppies- seriously) and put this on the wounds instead, certain those victims would die. Instead, those patients recovered at a much higher rate than the men with boiling oil. Here is where Vesalius proved his genius. A lesser man would have parroted some version of “correlation isn’t causation”. But Vesalius decided from then on to ONLY the balm treatment. Other doctors resisted but his far greater survival rate meant the actual military leaders forced the doctors to imitate Vesalius. Today “correlation isn’t causation” is used as a magic phrase to ignore obvious facts. While the phrase has its use, it is also overused.

There is no "gradual" with ADHD. There is only "All-In" or "Complete Stranger." My brain doesn't fade out of a hyperfixation or a vibe. It just severs the cord. I can go from 16 hours a day of pure obsession to feeling like that thing is a chore I’ve never seen before in my life. It’s not a choice; the interest just... expired. The door is locked and I no longer have the key.

Tried a new board game this week and was not impressed. Lots of flaws. 1. Only one scenario - Most games these days have dozens of scenarios you can play. This game starts the same every time. Very low replayability. Will probably get old fast. 2. No campaign mode - Every game is a standalone experience. This feels pretty lazy. Where are the Legacy style booster packs we can unlock? Where are the persistent changes, character upgrades, etc.? Just sloppy design work. 3. Crude miniatures - Yeah, they're kinda nice in a minimalist way, but it feels like they were just cutting costs here. No big bucket of plastic minis I can paint. Very low detail renderings on the small soldier pieces in particular. 4. No expansion packs - Adding on to the replayability problems is the fact that no new content has been announced. It's just good design and business sense to have the first 2 or 3 big box expansions already in production when the base game hits. But this is just a core set without any new content on the horizon. So the meta will probably die pretty fast. 5. New players are at a disadvantage - You have to play this game more than 2 or 3 times to find any kind of viable strategy. So new players are at a huge disadvantage. When I play a game, I want everyone to feel included so all players should be getting like 400+ victory points 6. Only one way to win - The only way to win is by taking the other player's king piece. That's it. No alternate paths to victory or other strategies to pursue. Just take the king and you win. Boring. I really would have liked if you'd been able to win by building up your kingdom peaceably, or pursuing alternate routes like farming, trade, or earning favor with a visiting monarch or something. As is, the game really pigeonholes you into just one approach. So yeah. I won't be revisiting this one. Sad, because it feels like there was a lot of potential here that was wasted by some short-sighted design and development decisions.

My toddler accidentally locked herself in the bathroom today. My wife thought she heard the water running too so we were pretty concerned pretty quickly. We were talking to our daughter through the door and she wasn’t really answering, but I could see under the door that she was standing near the wall, kind of nervously and not moving. We kept trying to get her to try to unlock the door but she wasn’t answering and couldn’t see us at all. So eventually I stick my fingers under the door and say come grab my fingers. She walks over annd immediately grabs my fingers and gives them a squeeze and I said great job baby. I said ok baby now look over at the lock and move it and she very calmly and quickly turned it and we opened the door. I’ve been managing a 24/7 on-call organization for many years now and I can’t tell you how many times somebody tries to slack someone to fix an incident with no effect (shouting through a door). But the minute someone sees you and knows you’re there with them they calm down and execute. People need people.
