The Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) has maintained a sustained interest in the power sector, a commitment reflected in our extensive body of investigative work. Our Regulators’ Monitoring Program (REMOP) Reports (🔗 bit.ly/wscijelectrici…) and our 2017 Status Report on Electricity in Nigeria (🔗 bit.ly/420TxtW)—featuring a compelling visual documentation—remain critical baselines for understanding the industry's trajectory. These reports provide a foundational look at the facilities and policy gaps that continue to shape the current energy landscape. On Tuesday, 14 April, we are bringing the entire value chain to the table for our Journalism & Society Conversations. From the GenCos producing the power to the DisCos delivering it, we are asking the hard questions: Why is the grid still failing? What is journalism exposing? By bringing together the Generation and Distribution arms of the sector alongside the journalists who audit their performance, WSCIJ aims to move beyond surface-level complaints toward actionable transparency. 📅 Tuesday, 14 April 2026 ⏰ 11:00 AM 📍 X Spaces 🔗 bit.ly/4lYUf4c @CJIDAfrica @BIkimberly @Dataphyte @macfound @gatesfoundation @Africmil @DevReporting @MojeedAlabi

Amnesty International strongly condemns the reckless and violent language of the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Mr. Nyesom Wike in which he stated that he can respond to a statement by a journalist with shooting. Mr. Wike stated on live television that: “If there’s anyway to broke (sic) the screen, I would have shot him…” Apart from inciting violence Wike’s remarks violated Nigeria’s broadcasting code that the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) is supposed to be enforcing. What Wike said carries the danger of normalizing violence and encouraging the targeting of journalists for just doing their job. This level of violent intent coming from a member of Nigeria’s federal cabinet is unlawful and unacceptable. Mr. Wike must withdraw his violent statement immediately and apologize.
