I feel like a lot of edits today focus heavily on motion design and fast paced animations that keep viewers visually stimulated.
But editing itself is storytelling. It is about pacing, knowing where to cut, what to remove, what to keep, and choosing the right music to shape the viewer’s experience.
I also see many people calling themselves editors while mostly doing motion design work. Both are valuable crafts, but they are different disciplines.
Editing focuses on building narrative and shaping the experience of a video, sometimes using motion graphics to support the story. Motion design, on the other hand, focuses on designing movement and visual elements that help sell a product, which is very different from selling an experience.
It is also worth noting that motion design and motion graphics are related, but they are not exactly the same thing. Taking the time to understand these differences can help us grow as editors and motion designers.
Editing sells an experience. Motion design sells a product.
