@AndyBxxx I think this level of safety was not normal in China until recently. Maybe it was different in small towns? Shenzhen had crime waves in the 2000s, a reporter friend told me his bicycle kept being stolen back then. I think the CCTV cameras changed everything.

I'm in Maotai Town, home of China's famous Maotai liquor. I ran into a guy on the street selling his baijiu. He offered to take me to his family's factory. When we came back I realized he'd left his little table and alcohol there the whole time. No one even touched it!

What I don't get about climate change deniers is why they're opposed the green transition. Say they're right and its a hoax. We still end up with a high-tech industrial revolution, more trees in urban centres, cooling systems, public transport, more EVs! Why is that bad?

LV won the lawsuit. But in China, it lost face. A French luxury brand looked at a floral pattern with deep roots in Chinese decorative tradition and acted as if beauty itself needed permission from Paris. That is what disgusted people. No one says brands cannot protect trademarks. But a four-petal flower is not automatically LV’s private kingdom. Chinese patterns existed long before Western luxury houses learned how to turn symbols into invoices. LV may have won US$1.5 million. But it reminded Chinese consumers that Western brands are very good at stealing civilization, privatizing aesthetics, and then suing others for touching the same cultural soil. LV may still call itself luxury. But it looks like cultural plagiarism dressed up as intellectual property.

I just arrived in Xinjiang for our family holiday and the one thing that immediately strikes me is that, so far, there seems to be virtually no foreign visitors (other than myself). We're in one of THE most touristic spot in the entire region, the central bazaar in Urumqi (which has great food, by the way, offering full refunds if the food doesn't taste good, see picture 👇), and it's fully packed but only with local Uyghurs and visiting Chinese tourists - not a single foreigner around! This is pretty crazy to me: there's so much being said about Xinjiang but obviously people don't bother coming here to check things with their own eyes. Despite there being absolutely zero restrictions to do so: as a French man I can even stay here 30 days visa-free, I just need to book a flight and show up, that's it 🤷‍♂️ I know I sound like a broken record on this but that's the biggest illness affecting commentary on China: people simply speak about it in the abstract without engaging with the reality of the place.

If you already have 90+% home ownership rate and your population is also declining, how will a crash in property prices help the people ? Everyone already has a home whose value is going down right ? Why will anyone buy a 2nd house in a crashing market ? And those who already bought a second house must all be suffering now, struggling to pay the interest ?

Which part of “Housing is for living in, not for speculation” don’t you understand? As a homeowner in a Chinese mega city, I hope housing prices stay affordable for our people. A nation built on speculation and squeezing citizens through sky-high property prices has no real future. China already has one of the world’s highest home ownership rates — we must keep it that way. Every Chinese student learns the Tang Dynasty poet Du Fu’s famous poem from over 1,300 years ago, where he dreams: “Could I get mansions covering ten thousand miles, I'd house all scholars poor and make them beam with smiles. In wind and rain these mansions would stand like mountains high. Alas! Should these houses appear before my eye, frozen in my unroofed cot, content I'd die.…” That’s the spirit we should all strive for.

People around the world may not know: India is opening an airport or terminal every 75 days. Some 80 airports have been built in the last 10 years, more than what India has built in the preceding 7 decades since independence. And the airports look like this.

@bin58101069 @BarrettYouTube True, but there's nuance to private capital in China. Even if they are private enterprises, they are still regulated by the state and they must ensure they serve the interest of the country.

For years the world thought China’s advantage was cheap labour. That era is over. I spent a week inside some of China’s most advanced factories in Ningbo, and what I saw was something very different: world-class automation, AI, 5G manufacturing, robotics, and companies building their own global brands instead of manufacturing for someone else’s. Countries hoping to compete with China won’t just need lower costs, they’ll need to match decades of investment in supply chains, infrastructure, engineering talent and manufacturing scale. The world is changing far faster than many people realise.
