@JoshHousden Single member wards that cover large rural areas. We should probably use a mix of STV and AV depending on the ward.

Is there any real argument as to why we shouldn't be using STV for local elections?

@BasilTheGreat It’s interesting how Basil has such strong feelings about the BBC, but uses the US spelling of “Licence” twice in one tweet.

@DuncanStott This is Japan trolling the UK specifically. “You can’t get one HS line built? We have so many bullet trains we’re using them to move boxes from the Hello Kitty factory. They’re not even full.”

@meganekenyon It’s a structural problem with council tax. Almost all other taxes are a % of something, so the cash amount automatically rises with inflation. Council tax doesn’t and has to be actively raised each year. There are obviously other issues with local govt funding too!

Interesting game which shows it's basically impossible to set a balanced council budget (as local authorities are legally required to do) without either 1. raising council tax or 2. cutting services. Fixing the social care system would be obvious answer to this vv tricky bind (which affects parties of all colours). But successive govts have kicked the can down the road. Something will *have* to give eventually. And it won't look pretty when it does. labourtogether.uk/council-sim

I’m sure you guys will call me a raging bastard but eventually we will have to admit that people on benefits already get enough in this country
Steven Swinford@Steven_Swinford

Exclusive from @MaxKendix Rachel Reeves is expected to limit an energy bill bailout to people on benefits after warning that giving support to every household because of the Iran war would be irresponsible and unaffordable The Times has been told that the planned support will be directed instead at about six million people who claim benefits such as universal credit and pension credit While Reeves has asked about a potential “income threshold” to support lower-earning households, officials have said they are unlikely to be able to develop the system in time. Treasury sources emphasised that several options were being looked at but that no decisions had been taken Officials have identified several barriers, including the fact that HM Revenue & Customs records the income of individuals, while an energy bailout would have to focus on households. A project to link up the information started in January and was due to take more than a year Reeves will therefore have little choice but to give support to people claiming benefits, using the warm home discount, which reduces electricity bills for poorer households by £150, as the model for the scheme “The methods of targeting are imperfect,” one government source said. But another said there was “a lot of defeatism” about what systems could realistically be introduced in time. thetimes.com/uk/politics/ar…

@AndyFitchet @mhclg If/when we have regional devolution, there’s a strong argument that north Hampshire belongs with the Thames Valley more than with the Solent.

@binny_uk @mhclg I agree. Romsey and Andover being put together in ‘74 was a nonsense. Both nice places but not materially connected at all. Andover should be in North Hampshire and Romsey with the Forest or Soton.

@mindofprospect @TomPowell6742 And a single room in outer London is 12k. Plus another grand in council tax. Since the 80s, for every £1 wages have gone up, housing costs have gone up £10. I need to earn £40k just to get off benefits.

Quite right. There’s nothing in an election leaflet that can’t be expressed in English, loudly and slowly while pointing to the pictures on the menu.

@barneyfarmer I’m still not sure why the development needs to happen where the garden centres are, rather than all the unused space in the same vicinity.

@BNHWalker In the event of war, South East Hampshire is incredibly vulnerable to a breakout to the sea at Farlington. This would leave SEH divided, while the Mid Hampshire forces island hop over The Deeps and take Hayling Island. I propose a UN buffer zone along the M27.

Nobody in Hampshire asked for changes to councils. It's a distraction from protecting services and won’t fix the mess that is the County Council’s budget taking Hampshire close to bankruptcy. But we will put residents and staff first and make this work for our communities.

Lewisham Labour going into this election proclaiming their record with new council housing. This site says otherwise. Empty for 20 years after council homes knocked down, the public private partnership has gone nowhere. Approved plans also have zero council or social homes

@policy_uk No idea, but the two are far from synonymous. And you still end up paying their rent if they’re unemployed and in private rent. The issue is training, housing cost and availability of jobs.

Can a university somewhere calculate the total value of freebies if you live in social housing in Zones 1/2? Eg. in effect no rent, energy bills subsidised, ‘social tariffs’ for water, no council tax, 50% off tube, limitless NHS healthcare. It’s a very expensive package.

@policy_uk There’s a 50% off card if you’re unemployed. Not just for living in a council flat. Again, Council Tax still applies unless you’re unemployed.
