I had the privilege of delivering a public lecture at the Institute of Public Administration and Management, IPAM University Freetown, on the theme “Women in Leadership: Breaking Barriers, Building the Future.” As an advocate for the empowerment of women and girls, I place great value on engaging university students. You are the generation being prepared to take the helm of affairs in the coming years. It is therefore incumbent upon me to speak to you candidly about the realities of leadership, the barriers that often accompany advocacy, and how society receives women who choose to lead. I also encourage you to pay attention to character and alignment. Your reputation is built now, while you are in university. Align yourself with people of integrity and clean records. The company you keep today can shape the path you walk tomorrow. Dream without limits. Do not shrink yourselves to fit expectations. Be present in decision-making spaces and claim your place at the table. Thankfully, Sierra Leone now has the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment Act. Use it. Do not live in fear. Be confident, be resilient, and take up your rightful place. When I launched the Hands Off Our Girls campaign, I faced strong resistance, particularly from those who believed girls could not be protected and valued equally. But the support of the nation made the campaign stronger than the opposition. That resistance is the barrier I set out to break. Today, the simplest way an underage girl can assert her right to protection is to say, “I am Fatima Bio’s daughter.” That is the change we have achieved by breaking barriers together. I am confident that my name will be remembered in every room where the protection and empowerment of women and girls in Sierra Leone and across Africa are discussed. My commitment remains unwavering: to ensure that every girl grows up safe, educated, and free to reach her full potential. FMB.

As the blessed month of Ramadan begins, we enter a sacred season of reflection, restraint, and renewal. This is the month where hearts soften, prayers rise higher, and mercy flows more abundantly. It is a time when we are reminded that true strength is not in power or position — but in patience, humility, and forgiveness. Ramadan calls us back to what truly matters: unity over division, peace over conflict, and love over hatred. Let us use this holy month to cleanse not only our bodies through fasting, but our hearts from anger, pride, and resentment. Let us speak gently, act justly, and extend compassion to every corner of our nation. May Allah forgive our shortcomings, heal our land, guide our leaders, and protect our children. May He unite us beyond tribe, politics, and differences, and make Sierra Leone a beacon of peace and righteousness. This Ramadan, let us pray not only for ourselves — but for our country. May peace fill our homes, wisdom guide our decisions, and unity define our future. Ramadan Mubarak, Sierra Leone. May Allah bless us all. Ameen. FMB

I have just arrived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to participate in the 30th General Assembly of Organization of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD), in my capacity as President of OAFLAD and First Lady of the Republic of Sierra Leone. This important gathering brings together First Ladies from across our great continent to deepen our collective commitment to advancing the health, education, and empowerment of women, children, and vulnerable communities. Through strategic dialogue, shared experiences, and coordinated action, we continue to strengthen Africa’s response to the challenges that affect our people most. My presence here in Addis Ababa reflects a renewed determination to champion sustainable development, amplify Africa’s voice on the global stage, and promote transformative leadership rooted in compassion, accountability, and service. As President of OAFLAD, I remain steadfast in ensuring that our platform delivers measurable impact—especially in areas of girls’ education, reproductive health, gender equality, and youth empowerment. Together, we will continue to build resilient communities and create opportunities that allow African women and girls to thrive. FMB.

We may be emotional, but emotions do not erase the truth. Nigeria does not need help from someone whose hands are stained with the blood of over 70,000 innocent people, including women and children. If he genuinely cared about Christians or Christianity, he would not have overseen their massacre in Gaza, nor the destruction of some of the most sacred churches on earth situated there.
