Ant-slayer spiders rapidly capture large ants with glue that coats their dragline silk. The spider avoids the ant’s mandibles by dropping below the ant on the same strand of silk. The ant is helplessly suspended in mid air pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn… Now in colour:

@Ibycter @bioarach @PNASNews @MPI_CE @mqnatsci @unihh Just checked some footage from Italy- I always get strong ant-head mimicry vibes when I see these guys especially with the wavy hind-legs (antennae ;) ). No somersault here, but looks like it still managed to get silk on that ant..??? Super cool spiders!

Not only does the spider capture the ant really fast, but also very successfully. Rapid movements and highly adhesive silk achieve A ~85% success rate. This leaves behind most apex predators. 3/3

@DrRossPiper @PeerJLife @ACA_DC Thanks! That’s quite interesting, we found only a handful of spiders in concrete after hundreds or more in tree trunks. And from your picture it does look like the same strategy wow Peru <—> Australia

@bioarach @PeerJLife Excellent stuff. I've seen similar behaviour in a species in Peru. I think it must be a tree-dwelling species, but have only seen them on the white walls of the field station buildings @ACA_DC Los Amigos where they use small depressions in the wall.

Well, it's been a hell of a year. Before I head off for (hopefully) a good long break, I'd like to do a public shout out to all the people who have helped me through. It's made me realise how lucky I am to be surrounded by such inspiring, supportive and downright awesome people

@MorganeMerien Wow cool finding! I never heard zacatón but campamocha is kind of an old word, like what grandparents would say. Although it also use for Mantis or for tall skinny people :)

@bioarach On the Spanish Wiki, it also says zacatón o campamocha for Mexico. Is that a slang version? What does that mean?
