A cheat code I wish I knew at 18... The 4 Types of Luck: In 1978, a neurologist named Dr. James Austin published a book entitled Chase, Chance, & Creativity: The Lucky Art of Novelty. In it, he proposed that there are 4 types of luck: (1) Blind Luck (2) Luck from Motion (3) Luck from Awareness (4) Luck from Uniqueness Here's what they are: Type 1: Blind Luck Completely out of your control: • Where you are born • Who you are born to • Base circumstances of your life • "Acts of God" These are the truly random occurrences of the universe. Type 2: Luck from Motion You’re creating motion and collisions through hustle and energy that you are inserting into an ecosystem. You increase your luck surface area through simple movement. The increase in collisions opens you up to more lucky events. Type 3: Luck from Awareness Depth of understanding within a given arena allows you to become very good at positioning yourself for lucky breaks. Naval says: "You become very good at spotting luck." You can “spot luck” from a mile away because of your knowledge and experience. Type 4: Luck from Uniqueness Your unique set of attributes attracts specific luck to you. “[This type] favors those with distinctive, if not eccentric hobbies, personal lifestyles, and motor behaviors.” - Dr. James Austin Type 4 Luck actually seeks you out. The Stages of Luck I personally think of Types 1-3 as coming in stages as you grow up: • Type 1 dictates your early years • Type 2 as you hustle in your 20 • Type 3 as you gain experience in your 30s+ Type 4 is unique—it’s dislocated from age. Always remember the Luck Razor: When choosing between two paths, choose the path that has a larger LUCK SURFACE AREA. Your actions put you in a position where luck is more likely to strike. It’s hard to get lucky watching TV at home—it’s easy to get lucky when you’re engaging and learning. There are lots of simple ways to increase your luck surface area: • Talk to more new people • Send more cold emails • Write/share in public • Participate in digital communities • Spend time in rooms where you feel like the dumb one To recap the 4 types of luck: • Type 1: Blind Luck • Type 2: Luck from Motion • Type 3: Luck from Awareness • Type 4: Luck from Uniqueness If you enjoyed this and learned something new, follow me @SahilBloom for more in the future!

43 common-sense life lessons to teach your kids so they grow up healthy, wealthy, and wise: 1. Don't type anything you wouldn't want printed on a billboard. 2. Money can't buy happiness. But it can buy the time to find what makes you fulfilled. 3. Most people fail because they quit. The rest fail because they never even try. Never let fear of failure keep you from trying. 4. Mistakes are lessons in disguise. Everyone makes mistakes. Winners learn from them. 5. The only place success comes before work is in the dictionary. If you want something, work for it. 6. There will always be rainy days. Always be prepared for a down time, because there will always be another one. 7. Every down is followed by an up. When you're feeling down, rest assured all you have to do is keep going. You'll be up again. 8. When someone tells you who they are, believe them the first time. 9. When someone does something kind for you, express gratitude. No exceptions. 10. Kindness comes from strength. Niceness comes from weakness. A nice man needs something. A kind man has everything he needs. 11. Closed mouths don't get fed. Nobody can read your mind. Winners know what they want and aren't afraid to express it. 12. People are ultimately self interested. You can use this for good or you can use this for evil. Use it for good. 13. Loyalty is more valuable than gold. If someone sticks with you in your down times, never lose that relationship. 14. If you're being criticized, it means one of two things: you're winning, or you're being a jerk. Make sure you know the difference. 15. The loudest criticisms will always come from below. But if you get criticism from above, make sure you're listening. 16. A happy life is built by asking yourself "am I proud of how I acted today?" and making sure the answer is always yes. 17. If you can't change it, if it's in the past, if it's out of your control: put it out of your thoughts. 18. Don't let your happiness depend on something others can take away. 19. Don't put all your happiness eggs in one basket. Have multiple things that make you happy. 20. Happiness can be defined as sustained fulfillment. Sustained fulfillment requires sustained improvement. 21. When you hold a resentment against another person, the only person who feels it is you. 22. You don't forgive people for them, you forgive them for you. 23. The early bird catches the worm. This doesn't mean you have to wake up early. It means you have to act quickly when you see an opportunity. 24. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink. He'll drink when he's thirsty. Layers to that. 25. Many hands make light work. A good team is far better than the sum of its parts. 26. Every action has consequences. You'll always reap what you sow, eventually. 27. If you're unsure what to say, stay silent. 28. If someone gossips to you, they'll also gossip about you. 29. If you want respect, earn it. 30. Your mother and I love you unconditionally. But no one else in this world will. Act accordingly. 31. Never be too predictable. Mystery begets intrigue. Intrigue begets devotion. 32. Where there's muck, there's brass. The best opportunities come from getting our hands dirty. 33. There are 2 kinds of people in this world. People who clean up trash, and people who watch other people clean up trash. Be the first kind. 34. The measure of a man is how he treats people who can do nothing for him. 35. Time waits for no one. Every second you waste is one you'll never get back. 36. If you're feeling down, create something. If you can't create something, help someone. 37. Empty vessels make the most noise. Those with low ability overcompensate with bravado. 38. A rushing stream gives clean water for life. A stagnant pond just breeds mosquitos. Never stop moving, always stay active. 39. Don't cross bridges you haven't gotten to yet. Don't fight giants that don't exist. Don't solve problems you don't have. 40. Pride comes before the fall. If you're feeling prideful, be weary. A humbling experience is likely right around the corner. 41. If someone tells you something's free: it's not. 42. Learn people's names. They'll love you for it. 43. If someone calls you a horse once, ignore them. If someone calls you a horse twice, refute them. If someone calls you a horse 3 times, buy a saddle. If you've made it this far, thank you for reading. I write these to share with my own kids, and I hope they're helpful for other parents out there. Which lesson is your favorite? Which do you disagree with? What lessons would you add? Post them in the comments

1/n A thread on Kerala, ISIS & Tipu Sultan. Please read, & circulate as much as possible. There is a reason why Kerala always had a connect with ISIS. Matter has a historic significance which largely is about fulfilment of Tipu’s dream. When I say dream, I mean it in all literary sense. Tipu desired whole world to become a Sharia complaint Mohammedan land & his ideology was very much based on learning—inspiration from those whose works led to creation of doctrine of Salafism. The doctrine of ISIS & its approach has a clear similarity with what Tipu’s decrees cried aloud. ISIS based its ideology on hybrid of Salafism (few claim it’s not Salafism, for a wee reasons like first fatawa coming from Salafi etc, but I’ll explain this too) which relied entirely on going back to purist form of Islam from the era of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) with establishment of Islamic State with the rule of Sharia. Let’s first look into inspiration of Tipu Sultan & then ISIS & then we will finally come to connection with Kerala. I’m sure that all would have heard of name Syed Ahmad Barelvi, whose influence made Deobandi school & he declared Bharat as Dar-Al-Harab, thereby declaring jihad obligatory for all Muslims against infidels with quest to establish Islamic State. His follower a family member of the theologian Shah Waliullah—Shah Ismail Dehlavi as wrote in his book, Sirat-e-Mustaqeem echoing thoughts of Sayed Ahmed as below: “A large part of present-day India has become ‘Dar-ul-Harab’. Compare the situation with the heavenly blessings of India two and three hundred years ago.” I’m quoting a famous anthem “Raisala Jihad” which Saeed had for his mujahideens as below: “War against the Infidel is incumbent on all Musalmans; make provisions for all things. He who from his heart gives one farthing to the cause, shall hereafter receive seven hundredfold from God. He who shall equip a warrior in this cause of God, shall hereafter obtain a martyr's reward; His children dread not the trouble of the grave, nor the last trump, not the Day of Judgement. Cease to be crowded; join the divine leader, and smite the Infidel. I give thanks to God that a great leader has been born, in the thirteenth of the Hijra.” Tipu Sultan’s family looked upon Ahmad Barelvi’s maternal grandfather & uncle as the teacher for Islam. They were Shah Abu Sayeed and his son Shah Abullais. Both father & son duo were not only spiritual guide but also the patron of Tipu’s family. There are evidences which clearly show that Tipu’s policies including declaration of jihad in 1786 was highly influenced by Sayeed & Abullais. Both of them had come to Madras in 1773 to spread mission of Shah Abdul Aziz Muhaddith Dehlavi. For more read, “Nuzhatul Khawatir, vol-7.” Shah Aziz was the eldest son of Shāh Walīullāh Dehlavi was one of the fiercest advocate of Ibn Taymiyya, the Islamic scholar who was one of the most primary inspiration for Salafi doctrine which would even inspire thinkers behind Muslim Brotherhood which in days to come would become a classic model towards establishment of ISIS. We will discuss it later. Let’s come back to the Tipu’s relationship with Shah Abullais & his father. Shah Abu Sayed visited the Sultanat-e-Khuddad (Hyder Ali’s realm) along with his son, Shah Abullais with the intention of spreading the mission of Shah Abdul Aziz Muhaddith Dehlavi. The idea was clear, so as to spread Islam in purist form now down south while mission was quite successful up north. Thousands of Muslims made an entry along with him. Later Shah Abullais too returned after performing Hajj & chose to stay in the Sultan-e-Khuddad permenantly and guide the Hyder Ali’s family. He stayed in the western coastal city of Koriyal Bandar. In 1822, when Syed Ahmad Barelvi visited Calcutta, Tipu’s wife & decedents living in Tollygunge made a visit recalling the old connect. You may read this islamreigns.wordpress.com/2019/11/10/tip… , words from Islamists themselves apart from Nuzhatul Khawatir, vol-7.”

3/n ISIS has always regarded itself itself as the true successor of these theological doctrines and always accused Al-Qaeda to have deviated. In fact, unlike Al-Qaeda, ISIS was also able to implement all these doctrines in its territories quite effectively. As an example, they used a fatwa of Ibn Taymiyyah to justify the burning alive of Jordanian pilot Muath al-Kasasbeh (read link embedded in tweet) arabic.cnn.com/middleeast/201… Other sources for Qutb & Salafi impact on ISIS as explained above: 1) ispionline.it/sites/default/… Professor Bartosz Bolechów from the University of Warsaw states: “Jihadi, revolutionary variant of Salafism is a modern phenomenon inspired initially by the writings of Sayyid Qutb (and then by scholars like Abu Muhammad al-Maqdisi and Abu Basir al-Tartusi) and born as a reaction to Islamic political fragmentation (after the fall of Ottoman Empire), colonization (by Western powers) and modernization.. If Jihadi-Salafism should be understood as a radical fringe of Salafism, the ideology of the Islamic State is so far its most extreme version. Some scholars are calling this variant Neo-Takfirism to stress the fact of its strained or even openly hostile relations with more “traditional” strains of jihadi organizations, its thinkers and leaders. This new variant is definitely an indirect byproduct of 9/11 and direct byproduct of GWOT: the chain of events started by the disruption of Al-Qaeda central in Afghanistan and then continued with an intervention in Iraq.. GWOT basically supported the narrative of the revolutionary Salafism: that counterterrorism is only a pretext used by the West in its historical quest for destroying Islam. It was a leading force and a key factor behind a further radicalization of an already radical worldview.” Source: studiapolitologiczne.pl/pdf-147954-739… But of all the Egyptian Jihadist theoretician and ideologue Abu Abdullah al-Muhajir, is widely regarded as the “theologian who shaped ISIS.” It is said that his works actually provided the most influential inspiration for modern jihadist strategies. His legal manual on violence, Fiqh al-Dima (The Jurisprudence of Jihad or The Jurisprudence of Blood) had become ISIS’ standard reference for justifying all acts of violence, like suicide operations, the mutilation of corpses, beheading, and the killing of children and non-combatants. Sources: 1) politicsandreligionjournal.com/index.php/prj/… 2) theatlantic.com/international/… ISIS often referenced legal literature of Ibn Taymiyya & his pupil Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya, collections of hadiths and commentaries. ISIS also referred to Contemporary scholarly works like the 19th century treatises of Wahhabi Aal al-Shaykhs, treatises of Sayyid Qutb, Juhayman Al-'Utaybi, the popular Jihadi literature produced by the exponents of the Sahwa movement, Shu'aybi school and Al-Qaeda. They exclusively referred various contemporary works of Salafi tradition like the early 19th century Yemeni theologian Muhammad Al-Shawkani. The pamphlets, videos & magazines of ISIS referred Ibn Taymiyya quite often. ISIS ideologues referred to Ibn Taymiyya by the title "Shaykh al-Islam". According to the records as of 2019, Ibn Taymiyya has been cited more than 40,000 times out of all the 300,000 pages published by various Al-Qaeda and ISIS Publications. Following the Salafi ideals, ISIS completely opposed anyone who worshiped Graves. They broke many tombs. Source: 1) jstor.org/stable/10.3366… 2) books.google.com/books/about/Mo…
