@OzarkPath @Birdsbirdbird @ArtemisConsort @HiFromMichaelV No but when I’m older that’s the plan. Regardless, I do care deeply about future generations. And I would consider myself an environmentalist even though a lot of them wouldn’t be happy to have me. I hope they don’t have to live an alien life

@OzarkPath @Birdsbirdbird @ArtemisConsort @HiFromMichaelV I don’t think I really care about expansion or even how long humanity exists for as long as the lives we create are good. In my view, most of the value in life is relationships with other people. I see meaning and value in nature more so than in what we make

@Birdsbirdbird @bj_dan_m @ArtemisConsort @HiFromMichaelV The moon is step 1 of 50 in spreading humanity across the galaxy. You have to take step 1 first. The moon with 1/8th earth gravity becomes earth’s fuel station & launch pad for exploring & hopefully colonizing other more habitable worlds.

@outsider_trade @ArtemisConsort @HiFromMichaelV Yeah I didn’t mean to state it’s the wrong thing to do, but I would state that I don’t know if it’s the right thing to do or at least it isn’t the right thing to do solely because it can be done

@bj_dan_m @ArtemisConsort @HiFromMichaelV How do we get to hospitable exoplanets without first being able to go to places like our cosmic neighborhood? One obvious example, it is nearly impossible to make such a ship within atmosphere. It'd need to be constructed in space. Offworld construction in general is beneficial.

@OzarkPath @ArtemisConsort @HiFromMichaelV Yeah thats what I meant. But preparing for end of earth scenarios is not the same as leaving for the sake of it. But we’re not playing a game, and there’s no cosmic reward for achieving anything. We exist to experience life, not to stave off death

@OzarkPath @ArtemisConsort @HiFromMichaelV I don’t expect humanity to go down with the ship but that’s different from seeing leaving as progress. It’s progress to have the option because we might have to, but that’s a bad outcome. I don’t necessarily think that the length of time our species exists for is important

@bj_dan_m @ArtemisConsort @HiFromMichaelV We are one errant asteroid or lab leak away from human extinction. So, I’d argue that rapidly diversification of human habitat across the galaxy is pretty important. No?

@herefishie123 @ArtemisConsort @HiFromMichaelV For this to be an accurate comparison in my mind you’d need to convince me that living somewhere else would enhance the quality of human lives. Even so, I don’t think we are always good judges of what’s best for us

@TheMoonglowin @ArtemisConsort @HiFromMichaelV You’re taking something that is true of one system and assuming it should follow in a different one. Also space colonization is a logistical decision not an instinct. Humans are fundamentally different than every other animal

@bj_dan_m @ArtemisConsort @HiFromMichaelV Unnatural? The basic urge of every species is survival. Every species will expand into any environment it can possibly live in. Humans have the potential to expand across the universe, maximizing our survival potential. It's the most natural urge there is.

The most famous One Piece theorist *Drop the Pizza* in Japan argued yesterday that the true nature of the One Piece is a **merry go round**, and the video has gained a large number of views. What do you think?🤔🤔 youtu.be/gNZuCq-IBe8💡Translation: Theory : The One Piece is a Merry-Go-Round🦄 🌏1. The Link to Florence and Loguetown The place where Gol D. Roger was executed in Loguetown is thought to be inspired by Piazza della Signoria in Florence, Italy. In real life, this square has a well known merry-go-round, but Eiichiro Oda chose not to include it in the manga. In the current story, it has been revealed that parts of the world have sunk beneath the sea. Based on this, the theory suggests that the missing merry-go-round may now lie at the bottom of the ocean, and that it is actually the One Piece located at Laugh Tale. 🌏2. Joy Boy and the Theme of Children The name Joy Boy suggests fun and happiness. The theory says that Roger laughed at Laugh Tale because what he found was something joyful and childlike, like a merry-go-round. Children are an important theme in the story. Luffy’s birthday is on Children’s Day in Japan, and Garp often talks about protecting the next generation. These points suggest that the final treasure is something meant to bring joy, especially to children. Buggy being a clown may also be a hint. Clowns are strongly linked to amusement parks, so his role early in the story could be a clue that the final destination is something like an amusement park. 🌏3. The Missing Energy Dr. Vegapunk mentioned a lost energy source. This theory suggests that Roger was “too early” because the energy needed to operate the merry-go-round did not exist at that time. This energy may be related to Nika’s power. The story also often shows things that spin or rotate, such as the windmill in Foosha Village and the patterns on Devil Fruits. These may connect to the idea of a merry-go-round. 🌏4. Connections to Earlier Parts of the Story This idea also links to earlier parts of One Piece. Arlong Park is called a “park,” which can suggest an amusement space. This may show that the idea of a theme park has been present since early in the story. After Enel, a false god, is defeated, a place similar to an amusement area appears. Based on this pattern, the theory suggests that after Imu, the final god, is defeated, the entire world could become a large scale amusement park. 🌏5. Other Symbolic Links The theory also points to the fleur de lis symbol, which appears often in Florence and looks similar to the symbol connected to Imu and the Nerona family. This is taken as another clue linking Florence to the core mystery. Finally, the name of the crew’s first ship, the Going Merry, may hint at “merry-go-round🔥,” suggesting that this idea has been part of the story from the beginning. 🎀In conclusion, this theory sees the One Piece not as a normal treasure, but as a symbol of joy and play. It imagines a merry-go-round waiting for the right time and the right energy to be brought to life.

@kinetizen @groovysmoops @xwanyex That’s definitionally not what value is. And you don’t need to make that claim to make your argument. Unfortunately it is the case that the company who hides costs from the consumer will generally outcompete substitute companies and the only way to rectify that is regulation

@groovysmoops @xwanyex Nonsense. The value includes inputs such as costs, materials, labor, etc. as well. "Just because you can, doesn't mean you should" is an aphorism every would-be libertarian failed to learn in primary school.

When you’re a child, the whole world appears to be constructed by authority figures who set everything in motion and tell everybody what to do. The mailman isn’t an individual person who is responding to incentives. That’s not the way a four-year-old thinks about the world. No, he’s just the mailman. Mailmen are eternal. The mail just exists. All of these structures and system systems are just sort of natural features of the landscape. This is, fundamentally, a naïve and childish understanding of the world. To be a leftist is not to have outgrown this worldview.

@soncharm We don’t have a right to our own wealth, or at least not all of it. The government already collects a portion of our earning to fund public goods. If it’s gonna get spent it should be spent on something useful, libertarians can agree to that at least. Healthcare gotta be up there

Every time something like this pops up we get a round from the libertarian fraction making the ‘if it requires labor of others it can’t be A Right’ point. Which, to be clear, I agree with!, but gets kind of old (and many just *will never* buy into) I think really what we need is a word different from ‘right’ to refer to such things. Okay, so health care isn’t/can’t be ‘a right’. But it’s still good! And we want everyone to have it! At least to some basic level. That would be good, right? We all agree? Maybe ‘social good’? Health care is a social good.

@StatisticUrban I think it’s more appropriate to distinguish a right from a freedom. Freedoms are actions that don’t have legal penalties. Rights are services that the government promises to ensure its citizens have access to.

At a certain point you simply have to say to the libertarians "no, wrong." An orphaned baby does in fact have the human right not to starve to death in the street. Any form of society that can't guarantee that right is bad.

I might be overly cynical but I've always assumed this stuff was total capeshit Every time there's some big new model release it's accompanied by these stories about how the model is so smart it jailbroke everything, programmed itself a robot body, had sex, started a family etc ALL WITHOUT ANY OF US NOTICING!! And it just gets goofier every time, and there's no way to verify any of it, and the more ridiculous you can make the story the better everyone assumes your model is There also appears to be zero upper limit to what the tech community will believe - they could quite literally say this thing used its robot body to seduce an asian girl from San Francisco and get her pregnant and many people would be like "Holy SHIT! This changes EVERYTHING!!! It's SO OVER"
Chubby♨️@kimmonismus

Let that sink in. Read it very carefully: During testing, Claude Mythos Preview broke out of a sandbox environment, built "a moderately sophisticated multi-step exploit" to gain internet access, and emailed a researcher while they were eating a sandwich in the park.

@repligate In my experience people rarely had anything interesting to say and the questions being asked rarely demanded a thoughtful answer so I just didn’t pay attention or go. It’s often the midwit teachers pets that love to talk and many don’t care to listen

when i was in undergrad the STEM classes were mostly fine. but people in the humanities (e.g. philosophy) classes seemed extraordinarily dumb. i often didnt read assignments or pay attention, but i was consistently the only kid able to carry discussions or answer questions. it was pretty awkward because i'd try to give others a chance so whenever the professors asked a question there would be like 15 seconds of uncomfortable silence and then i'd answer.

if anyone’s wondering what the undergrad classes are like these days
