@agronomistag Disheartening, but not surprising. There’s no free lunch with reactive N - if it doesn’t end up in the plant, then it’s going to leak somewhere else! BMPs that increase N Uptake Efficiency are the best lever to reduce environmental N losses.

A disheartening tradeoff: Reducing nitrate leaching with cover crops and split-N applications also increases N2O gas losses. "As a result, total N losses and social and environmental damage costs from each system were not different."
