I was a fighter pilot in the Swedish Air Force, this is my take on the operation against Iran.
As predicted: zero opposition to Israeli and US air power now 24h into the operation.
This means that the US and Israel air assets - fighter jets and ofc reaper drones etc - can operate at high altitudes without fear of getting engaged by ground based air defences or Iranian fighters for that matter.
Using long times on station, fuel tanks and targeting pods - large parts of Iran are now a turkey shoot for the coalition.
Everything that moves and is hostile can be engaged.
Iran is a big country. So ofc some parts will not have monitoring 24/7.
The IRGC will hide in cities using the reluctance of the coalition to risk civilian casualties.
So everything now is on tjejband of the Iranian population. Do they want freedom?
The opportunity is now.

Sometimes a procurement decision says more about strategy than about the aircraft.
Washington’s response to reports that Canada may lean toward the Saab Gripen has been unusually public for a routine fighter purchase. Statements from the U.S. Department of Defense suggest the issue is being viewed through a strategic lens, not just a technical one.
This debate is not really about speed, stealth, or unit cost. It’s about long-term airpower integration, defense-industrial dependencies, and how interoperability is defined inside NATO.
If confirmed, Canada’s direction could signal a shift: allied procurement becoming more flexible, less tied to a single supplier ecosystem, and more focused on resilience and autonomy.
In a security environment marked by tighter budgets, higher readiness demands, and supply-chain risk, fighter choices increasingly reflect strategy as much as capability.
This is bigger than one aircraft. It’s about how alliance cooperation adapts in a more complex, multipolar world.

@ronaldo77169905 @Defence_Index Gripen is stealth with EW. Not with poor aerodynamics.

@Defence_Index Ukraine needs Stealth Fighter Jets like F-35. Anything less than that it’s a Waste of Money. If it’s not stealth-it’s Stone Age tech today. Don’t be naive.

🇨🇦🇸🇪 BREAKING: Saab floats the idea of a Gripen fighter production hub in Canada, not just for Ottawa, but potentially for exports, including Ukraine.
Could create 10,000 jobs and boost Canada’s air power while complementing a mixed fleet with F-35s. The first jets could start in Sweden, with production shifting to Canada.

❗️❗️🇺🇦🇸🇪 Ukraine is preparing to begin training on the Swedish JAS 39 Gripen fighter jet.
According to Denys Shmyhal, Ukrainian pilots and ground personnel are set to start Gripen training, signaling concrete steps toward operational integration.
Kyiv appears to be moving closer to fielding the Gripen, with plans that could eventually involve the acquisition of up to 150 aircraft—an expansion that would markedly enhance Ukraine’s air combat effectiveness and air defense posture.
This would represent a significant potential shift in the balance of Ukraine’s airpower.

Gripen E or F-35? The wrong question, argues former Gripen pilot @mikaelgrev.

@Paul896307 @ClintonDesveaux No. The F35 is not invisible, a common misunderstanding.
If you add external fuel tanks wich you need because F35 has got poor aerodynamics/range, then radar signature is big.
The Gripen is difficult to detect, because it uses smarter and cheaper ways to hide. That's EW.

This is video explains why the Gripen is a better choice compared to the F35. Unlike the American F-35, Sweden would never withhold critical software updates or spare parts for their Gripens as punishment if your country’s leader were to inadvertently say something they disagreed with because Canada would own the intellectual property and the parts.
I’m an airplane junkie and have been one all my life. I am in no way directly or indirectly connected to Saab or the government or military (which has a weird fascination with US control.)
The Gripen is a better deal financially - it’s less problematic and far easier to operate and maintain.
Cost:
We can get three Canadian-built (Halifax) Gripen fighters for the price of one F-35. That represents massive savings!
The hourly flight cost of the F-35 is $36,000 USD ($50,500 CAD).
The hourly flight cost of the Gripen is just $7,000 USD ($9,800 CAD).
With its smaller ground crew requirement and significantly lower cost per unit, the Gripen E is a compelling alternative - perfectly suited for defending Canada’s vast northern frontier.
With the Gripen, Canada would own the intellectual property and technology outright, with no concerns about kill switches or throttled performance. It allows us to spend less on procurement while investing more in our own aerospace industry.)
Canada has multiple helicopter platforms and we can do the same with jets.
I’m confident Prime Minister Mark Carney will make the right choice - because we are Canada Strong! 🇨🇦
