As of today, my daughter has been cancer-free for 2 years since her bone marrow transplant, which means survivorship—It’s a huge milestone! I want to be clear that this doesn’t mean “mission accomplished” and that it will never come back again, but probably time for us to move forward as a family. I will never forget what this community did for our family during those incredibly trying times. @FumingMouth. My former manager @pdo_recruits. @lil_dill and the stripe crew. People I worked with YEARS ago or @ivanhzhao @akothari and staff who barely knew me at the time—I basically joined notion and then 2 months later went on leave. Feeling grateful, don’t take anything for granted. Much love.

the level of reality they spawned into was too high up in the stack - they're the first generation to surpass the abstract maxima. Prior to now, abstractions were built to represent lower levels of reality - the computer desktop maps directly to the surface of the physical desk it replaced - filing cabinet, calendar, calculator, trash can, notepad, etc The simulation of the real could be traced down the stack and would eventually hit ground in base reality. Gen Z inhabits a pure state of abstraction where they are unable to make contact with the ground. Past this event horizon, the system becomes weightless - never exchanged for the real, but exchanged for itself in an uninterrupted circuit without reference.

When I was a kid, I remember going to the zoo or the amusement park and seeing other, rowdier, children in those rental harnesses with leashes attached to them. You don't really see this anymore, and I'm not sure why. Are our kids less rowdy? Smaller family sizes? Too cruel?

I quite like Dorothy Sayers' answer from her 1942 essay Why Work?. Quality work inherently honors God and His creation. We spend too much time assigning moral weight and obsessing over moral frameworks for work, when instead we could just do Good Work and that alone is enough.

Two conversations this weekend make me think that there's a vibe shift afoot in Silicon Valley around what one should work on and what is worthwhile. Culturally, it feels like the moment is ripe for new frameworks: • Davos expert morality is stale and discredited. • It's also apparent that the "just be super based" Counter-Enlightenment is not really an answer. (Yes, woke went too far, but simply inverting it doesn't work.) • EA is no longer the automatic default for smart people. • There's increasing skepticism of slot and slop machine dynamics. Overall, "what is worthy and valuable?" feels like it's becoming more central.
