Lots of great academic books out there. This is rarer: a necessary one. It shows how the humanities can be positive, productive, and joyful — not just critical and suspicious. If we’re going to make the field attractive again, it’ll be through books like this. A++

Sometimes a student in one of my fiction writing classes will come see me during office hours and inform me they’re going to be a novelist. I always ask the same question: “Who are your favorite authors?” An alarming number of students can’t name a single novelist. Not one.

Rewatched "No Country for Old Men" yesterday, and I am placing my head under the guillotine here by saying this, but making movies with ambiguous endings is terrible art because it shows the director's and writer's lack of decisiveness in making, defending and completing their point, and by “leaving it to the audience to guess what happens”, they absolve themselves of all moral responsibility. It's how dreams on DHT, or stories in Dickens' writing, despite the intense emotions and darkness, always end with satisfying conclusions.
