Become a campground host with us! 🌲✨ We’re looking for enthusiastic seasonal volunteer hosts for recreation sites across the nation to be the welcoming face of our public lands. According to @NWS, there continues to be higher risk for wildfires in the Central and Southern U.S. In these conditions, do not light campfires, bonfires, or anything else that could blow over and start a fire. Keep yourself and your community safe!

Do your part to help prevent wildfires as record heat impacts much of the country this week. According to the @NWS, hundreds of daily temperature records may be set from the West Coast to the Plains. These conditions can accelerate fuels drying and snowpack melting, increasing wildfire risk in many areas. Take a few steps to help prevent wildfires and protect your community: - Check local fire restrictions - Avoid activities that could spark a fire on hot, dry, or windy days - Properly extinguish your campfires – drown, stir, and cold to the touch - Secure tow chains and keep your car tires fully inflated - If debris burning is permissible in your area, keep piles small and burn only under appropriate conditions Small actions can prevent devastating wildfires. Fireworks will once again light the sky above Mount Rushmore National Memorial on July 3, 2026, as the nation celebrates the 250th anniversary of American independence. Set against the iconic carvings of Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln, the celebration invites Americans to reflect on our nation’s remarkable journey and the leaders who helped shape it. Meet June, the final member of the Wild Horse and Burro Freedom250 Ambassador Team and master of logistics! June has spent the last 25 years as a Wild Horse and Burro Specialist with the BLM and has held positions with Eastern States, Arizona, and Wyoming. Throughout 2026, her hope is to raise awareness of wild horse and burro contributions to America’s past, present and future as part of this important milestone in our country’s history – 250 years of American independence! On March 3, 2026, the moon slipped into Earth’s shadow, glowing in deep copper and crimson during a stunning lunar eclipse. This view was captured from Ironwood Forest National Monument, where dark desert skies make moments like this unforgettable. Meet Liberty the wild burro! Liberty is a 17-year-old gray gelding from Cibola-Trigo Herd Management Area near Yuma, AZ. Like Freedom, Liberty was also gathered outside of the herd management area boundary when his jenny found a local lettuce field to snack in. Liberty was gathered with a baited trap several weeks later. Once in BLM care, it was quickly realized that Liberty was too young to be on his own and, after a visit to the vet for a check-up, he was brought to BLM handler June for fostering just before Thanksgiving in 2008. He quickly attached himself to June and her then 3-year-old daughter, Josie, so he became a permanent member of the family. Liberty was Josie’s first mount, has been used extensively for packing, and has taken part in many school activities over the years. Fun Fact: Liberty lives life on his own terms and June is quick to share that he’s very smart – which can sometimes come across as stubborn. If it doesn’t make sense to him, he’s not going to do it. Why walk over a pole on the ground when you can go around it, right?! Liberty and his trail partner Freedom are traveling the nation as we celebrate 250 years of American independence this year! On K9 Veterans Day, please take a paws to appreciate all the working dogs who help protect public lands, visitors, and wildlife! 🐾 From sniffing out invasive species to assisting in search-and-rescue missions, these four-legged officers play a vital role across Interior.

What started as a career in public lands has turned into a family legacy for BLM-California Arcata Field Manager Collin Ewing. Collin recently discovered that he’s the descendant of Thomas Ewing Sr. — the first Secretary of the Department of the Interior.
