In my opinion, President Trump’s Davos speech was the most unconventional yet consequential speech of any president since John F. Kennedy spoke in front of the Berlin Wall. Three things stood out to me: 1. President Trump rightly took off the table using force to acquire Greenland. He made an overwhelmingly compelling case that legally providing the U.S. title to Greenland changes our defenses dramatically. With the legal title, President Trump is willing to massively upgrade arctic defenses, not only to benefit the United States but also for the benefit of NATO and our European partners. I am hoping that Denmark will work with President Trump to meet these needs because it may be the biggest contribution Denmark has ever made to the common defense of NATO. 2. In my view, President Trump put Hamas on a time clock. He gave them no more than three weeks to disarm. And if they don’t, Israel gets a green light to wipe them out. 3. President Trump acknowledged that Ukraine is important, but that Europe needs to up its game. He’s right. He wants to end the bloodbath, and both Zelensky and Putin need to move closer to the negotiating table. On a cautionary note, we have to have security guarantees that are clear and unequivocal that would deter Putin or Russian leaders like Putin in the future. Anything less would lead to a third invasion. As these security guarantees are being negotiated, remember they must be approved by Congress. In short, they have to be both realistic and real. If the Europeans, particularly Denmark, work with President Trump, he could be the most consequential president in NATO’s history since Ronald Reagan. To my European friends: Listen to what President Trump was saying and choose wisely. To Hamas: Your days are numbered. To our friends in Ukraine: We’re not going to abandon you. To the ayatollah: President Trump has declared you are no longer the biggest bully in the Middle East. President Trump has rightly chosen the Iranian people over the ayatollah. This will change history for the better.
