@jasnalder @HACKETTREF Take away the technology (apart from goal-line), leave it to humans and embrace the inconsistency (not just of officials). Then we'll have our game back. #var

@bobbounds65 @HACKETTREF Yes that’s the point, the referee disagreed with another referee (VAR), that other ref will referee next time and in a similar situation will call it differently! Whether you agree with the call or not, the lack of consistency is very worrying as are the laws of the game 🤷‍♂️

@HACKETTREF So what happened to the referee having 'full authority' over the game according to FA rules?

After been the boss of the PGMOL and a Referee on the Premier League and FIFA InternationalPanel for ten years. I fully understand the criteria of operation of VAR. I also know that the ref got it wrong He got it wrong 100%
Bob Bounds@bobbounds65

@HACKETTREF I don't think you understand what VAR is there for. Ref backed his on-field decision. Move on.

@Baddiel Hemingway is in there, Farewell to Arms. I'd swap one of Dickens three (more would be deserved but greedy) for Tale of Two Cities.

As some have pointed out also no Waugh, Steinbeck, Hemingway. I’d add: only one Graham Greene, the wrong choice of book at the wrong end of the list…

@henrywinter I was at Wembley in 2018 Eng v Italy when VAR was first used. Italy appealed for a pen late on and I watched the ref run over to the side and look at a TV screen. I was laughing. Surely this isn't how they do it? Yep. And he gave it. #var

At some point, they will have to play the audio of the decision-making process live, the communication between referee and VAR. IFAB against, though. But why shouldn’t match-goers - who fund the game - and viewers - who fund the game - know exactly what’s going on in the game? It would increase transparency for a start. It would engage fans (maybe enrage) rather than keeping them fiddling their thumbs, impatient for a decision. It works in rugby union (TMO) and cricket (DRS) - admittedly sports with different rhythms and volatility in responses. It might put additional pressure on officials, but it’s a mess currently and fans deserve a more transparent process.

@GerryMoore101 Agree. @BBCWorldatOne just described it as"another extraordinary day at Westminster" Apart from the opening of parliament (hardly a surprise) nothing has actually happened.

@matthewsyed The 24-hour news cycle and social media is a toxic combination. There's no time to take a breather, take stock. 'We want something to happen, and we want it NOW!'

The ministers urging Starmer to go are feeding the hysteria. The next leader will be subject to instant leadership speculation and the next, and the next, whether Labour, Reform or Tory. Britain is becoming ungovernable. And the media fixation on this tittle tattle is not helping
