Another #RCV update with @GregoryJackson, @LisaJRaymond and @candacetiana uniting in a crowded Democratic at-large race.
Gregory Jackson@GregoryJackson

DC Residents, As a candidate for DC Council at Large, my commitment is to make DC a safer, more affordable place where ALL can thrive. I am committed to building a real public safety strategy and investments to make our communities safer. I will work to shift the philosophy of the DC Council to make DC a better place for small businesses to open, thrive and create jobs. I am committed to protecting and expanding resources for our youth, both education and recreation to ensure our future generations are better prepared for the real world. Additionally, I will build power within Congress to protect Home Rule and strengthen the coalition fighting for DC Statehood.  I know I’m the best candidate to accomplish that, but in an environment with 8 other candidates and rank choice voting, I encourage my supporters to consider ranking Candace Tiana Nelson and Lisa Raymond high on your list for DC Council At-Large.  At a time when our city faces significant challenges around affordability, public safety, economic opportunity, and trust in government, I believe Candace and Lisa bring the integrity, experience, compassion, and vision necessary to move our communities forward. Candace Tiana Nelson has demonstrated a deep commitment to government service, equity, and community-centered leadership. Her ability to connect policy and government with the real needs of residents makes her a powerful voice for families, working people, and neighborhoods across the District. Lisa Raymond has long been recognized as a thoughtful and results-oriented leader who understands how to bring people together to solve problems, especially in education. Her dedication to public service and improving quality of life for residents reflects the kind of steady leadership our city needs right now. Together, Candace, Lisa and I represent a new generation of leadership grounded in experience, collaboration, accountability, and action. We understand that effective leadership is not about talking points, it is about delivering meaningful results for the people they serve. During this critical time for the District, I encourage residents to support my run for DC Council and consider highly ranking Candace Tiana Nelson and Lisa Raymond. Less talk, more action.  Sincerely, Greg Jackson Jr. Candidate, DC Council At-Large

@ZachBIsrael .@repoyedc recently polled DC environmentalists, unions, teachers, animals, and working families and found 26 groups that endorsed him. Plus he has out raised and outspent his opponents. Does that help you better understand the state of the race?

There has still been virtually no public polling released for the *9-candidate* At-Large Councilmember Democratic primary! Would be very helpful for voters to know where things stand in this competitive citywide race, so they can make a better informed choice for their rankings!

@SamDelgadoDC While out-of-town backed candidates cross-endorse each other, @repoyedc has earned 26 local endorsements from DC unions, teachers, environmentalists, and working families. DC decides who represents DC. Not outside money.

First cross-endorsement in D.C’s Democratic At-large council race: Lisa Raymond is telling her supporters to rank both Candace Tiana Nelson *and* Greg Jackson “highly” their ballots

New: There’s finally some cross endorsing happening in the Dem at-large race. Lisa Raymond says she’s encouraging her supporters to also back Greg Jackson/Candace Nelson. Both have also said publicly they support Raymond so expect to see more cross endorsing from them too.

@ZachBIsrael Constituent outreach to folks like you is part of managing a campaign! And fixing OUC is a top priority, wait times and misclassifying calls is literally killing people. If you have fixes let us know!!

A bit surprising that none of the 9 Democratic At-Large CM candidates mentioned the Office of Unified Communications (OUC) in response to this question…
Martin Austermuhle@maustermuhle

Another good question was for each candidate to name an under-performing agency they'd fix. Owolewa said D.C. Health, Raymond said DCPS's special education, Chavous said MPD, Davis leaned towards UDC, Forester said DOES, @fredhill4dc pointed to the Department of Buildings.

@upsellsunshine @OnionConLaw @mattyglesias I couldn't agree more. That is why we put out many more statements than just free buses. DC buses generate $14 mil a year in a $4.8 bil dollar system, so this is a tiny bit of a much bigger conversation. We appreciate the engagement even if from NYC =)

@bobschlehuber @OnionConLaw @mattyglesias You're right there are logistical difference between rail and bus. What I wanted to highlight is that there are financial, safety, and quality costs when a transit system is more open (i.e., free).

@FeverPotomac @repoyedc This is one of the dumber DC debate moments I've seen in a while. Mr. Jackson misread a DSA questionnaire, confusing DSA's background and question as Dr. Oye's answer. Oye did his best to respond to Mr. Jackson's very poorly executed oppo research zinger.

@maustermuhle This is one of the dumber moments in DC debates I've ever seen. Jackson confused the background and question from DSA as Owolewa's answer. Oye a bit confused, answered the best he could. @maustermuhle why not inquire where Jackson pulled his info before reporting on this?

🧵: Last night was the official debate for the ten At-Large D.C. Council candidates who are taking public financing, and it was a good one. (Props to @TheArtist_MBS for some great questions!) Some outtakes below; you can watch the whole thing here: youtube.com/live/5khX6kOED…

@flywithkamala @mattyglesias My friend, we are simply trying to study and compare and learn across US cities. Ain't no one talking about bringing NYC to DC or DC to KC or KC to LA. But we don't need to re-invent the wheel (pun intended) when the goal is safety for bus drivers and for all riders.

@bobschlehuber @mattyglesias I knew you’d reach that conclusion. Typical, but I did not say that. There are many solutions, the one NYC is pursuing is not FREE fares. I mention police because you want NYC in DC but YOU DONT WANT POLICE ON PUBLIC TRANSIT LIKE NYC DO YOU? Got it. Leave NYC out of it lol

@upsellsunshine @OnionConLaw @mattyglesias Now you are talking about rail fares where in metros you have the option to build infrastructure to support riders. We are talking about bus fares where DC does not have bus stations or controlled access points.

@bobschlehuber @OnionConLaw @mattyglesias new gates have compelled more riders to pay their fare—revenue is projected to rise by $10 mil/year...an enormous drop in vandalism. Workers spent nearly 1,000 fewer hours cleaning up [after] the gates’ install, compared with the 6 months before. Crime on BART fell by 41% last yr

@TheOmniZaddy @mattyglesias Okay, just talked to the bus driver. He says he does not agree with you that every bus in DC or NYC should have a national guard or cop on it. He says one cop per bus for enforcement is too many. Let me know what your bus driver says in return!

@bobschlehuber @mattyglesias (That was something that *I* thought was excessive. But alas) Bus drivers don’t want to have to do the fare enforcement themselves, as they want to focus on driving. But they like it when specialized law enforcement handle it. Go talk to your local bus driver and circle back.

@NahImNotDecent @yemisi Why? KC and DC have 500k vs 700k people and are US cities. KC metro area is much larger than DMV, but has less people. So its within reason to compare US metropolitan transit systems to one another. So whats the joke?

“Eliminating fares improves public safety” is a wild claim. DC (imo) has the best Metro system in the country: clean, safe, and reliable. Reduced fares for people who need them? Yes. Eliminating fares entirely? Foolish and risks weakening the system we all rely on.

@Kurtesque91 I always enjoy American leftists demanding European style infrastructure and social programs while entirely ignoring how those systems work. Name a world-class transit system and you’ll find fares.

@TheOmniZaddy @mattyglesias When you say "our" you worked on this study? And then you say we shouldn't look at assault rate data because "you" did not do proper DiD but then you bring up journey time and other indicators to advance your point. Go talk to your local bus driver and circle back.

@OnionConLaw @mattyglesias If someone breaks the law on a sidewalk, library or bus they would be arrested. Eliminating bus fare doesn’t trigger the purge on the back of the bus.
