@THB_STX Yes, because that scan method uses connect() and we don't have control over how the OS implements that.

@bonsaiviking Hi Daniel, I found a specific (potentialy normal) behaviour in Nmap. When using a TCP CONNECT scan with -sT, --max-retries is ignored and multiple retransmissions are sent in any case. Is this a normal behaviour? Is it because of the network stack used?
Thanks!

Fascinating! Mastodon were browsers and mammoth were grazers. Mastodon have straighter tusks and pointier teeth; mammoths have curled tusks and flat teeth.

@codinghorror @Shedletsky I often find that the book is a better book than the movie, and the movie is a better movie than the book. To judge either against the other is fraught with our personal judgment of the two media.
English

@Shedletsky I'd say they are equally good in subtly different ways

If you haven't seen "The Arrival" (2016) or read "Story of Your Life" (2002), please do. Both are among the best I've ever experienced. (Spoilers in article!) theatlantic.com/entertainment/…

@halvarflake @paulg There are:
1. what I mean by the word
2. what they mean by the word
3. what God intends the word to mean
Even atheists believe in God-given meanings to words, expressed as "this is what the word means" rather than "this is what I man" or "what do you mean?".
English

@bryanww @codinghorror Neither. Both sides are perfectly reasonable. The problem is that they do not agree on priors.
English

@codinghorror are you saying this logic is unreasonable or a valid point?
English

@egyp7 @halvarflake "Dunce" similarly was derived from a person's name who had gained the reputation of rejecting knowledge.
English

@egyp7 @halvarflake "Ignoramus" has a nice literary history and implies ignorance (which a person has control over) vs low intelligence (which *may* be biologically unavoidable).
