Since 2016, dispersion in the $VIX has fallen to the current level 15 times. Each was followed by a move higher in volatility. The severity of the increase varied, but all saw an increase. Going back further, there's been 42 instances since 2004. The VIX was higher 60% of the time 2 weeks later and 68% of the time three weeks later.
