Today I voted in favour of Keir Starmer going to the Privileges Committee over the Mandelson issue. I don’t agree with Labour MPs being whipped to vote against this and as my friend @EmmaLewell so eloquently told Parliament today, in doing so the Government has shown how deeply disconnected it is from the public mood. I am seeking full transparency and accountability from all public officials via #Hillsborough Law and nobody should be above that.

I have just voted with the Motion referring the Prime Minister to the committee of Standards and Privileges. I am confident the committee would have exonerated him. We now have the indignity of being accused of voting for a ‘cover up’ which our opponents are excited to prosecute.

The appointment of Peter Mandelson was wholly and utterly unsuitable. Nonetheless, the PM has set out a detailed chronology, and made it clear he has not misled this House. It would be the right thing to do to embrace this Privilege process.
