The World Cup proved something MLS has been making excuses about for years: Every stadium can host elite football on natural grass when there’s a will to do it. For a month, the U.S. showcased world-class grass pitches. The quality of play was better, the ball moved better, and players overwhelmingly preferred it. Now we’re going right back to artificial turf. It’s embarrassing that a league trying to be among the world’s best still accepts a playing surface that many top players openly dislike. If MLS wants to be taken seriously as a top football league, it should require every club to play on natural grass. The World Cup showed it can be done. The only thing missing now is the ambition to make it permanent.
