@sovereignofkent I've often observed that undergrad is learning all the things we DO know, then grad school is learning about how much more we DON'T know.

@planet4589 5 seconds from capture, and I still thought it would crash. Fantastic job! (And, incidentally, Starship made it to orbital insertion. That's the first time that's happened, right?)

Who was the mastermind that had the brilliant idea of setting up videos in this website so that it jumps to a totally unrelated video after you're done watching a video? It's so tiring

@lastplacecomics @SullivanBarsan1 In old school photo developing, you'd use a tool that looks like that to selectively cast shadows on the print as it develops, which is called "dodging."

Today is the 80th anniversary of D-Day. A battle which I am very proud to say my grandfather survived. I did not know him well, as he passed 30 years ago. But I do know, he'd be very sad to see the current state of the world. I'll be thinking of him today.

@FeuFollet_ @MCCCANM Right, which is why you need ground tugs to move planes backwards. Planes are highly optimized for moving forward, backward not so much.

On takeoff, the wheels continue to spin in the air. Pulling spinning wheels into the landing gear bay is undesirable, as a damaged tire may cause damage to other systems, like hydraulics Thus, when the landing gear is raised, most large airplanes automatically apply some brakes to the main gear to stop this spin before retraction. As a secondary safety measure, many aircraft have several small plastic tabs that hang down on the underside of the wing around the main gear. In theory, if a tire is damaged & begins to shed pieces of itself, those pieces will hit one of the tabs, which are basically just plugs along a specific hydraulic system. Hitting one of them (which breaks it off) instantly dumps hydraulic pressure to the gear system, preventing gear retraction All of which works well, but the nose gear doesn't have brakes. Fortunately, there aren’t a lot of components sharing space in the nose gear bay, though Instead, nose gear tires are pulled into the nose gear bay & pressed against brake pads called “snubbers”, which stops the wheels. If you’re sitting near the front, you may be able to hear this effect; unlike the main gear which stop in a second, the nose gear takes a little longer to stop, and it sounds a little like something wobbling or shaking under the floor
