Four months of being car-free, taking the bus almost every day and frequently walking/biking through downtown and i’ve yet to see one single needle and the only things that makes me fear my life are drivers

@biculturalbrokr I see those plastic neon children as a cry for help (which makes it especially sad when CDOT used them). Every block that has one should get a diverter.

Last night I chatted with Emery (& her mom) after noticing their block littered w/these ⤵️. “I’m not even allowed to cross the street to visit X who lives right there [pointing expressively 2 houses down & across]!” Em is a 5th grader, perfectly capable of moving independently.

In 1923 children's right to the safe and convenient use of their own local streets was still presumed and legally enforced. It's not mobility progress if it limits children's safe and independent mobility.

I'm doing some work with the city's crash data, and I'm always struck by the scale of traffic violence. Each dot represents a crash that occurred between Sept 2017 and June 2023. Obviously there were no injuries for the majority, but that doesn't mean there were no victims.

@cdpheapcd What does “lingering effects from exposure over recent days” mean? My guess is that our lungs took a beating and need time to recover, thus we should stay indoors, even though the air quality is slightly better right now. Is that correct?

@jlocantore We closed this street, E 17th Ave, to through traffic for over a year. No crashes, no deaths, and no major impact on traffic. Then we reopened it with no design changes, just 1 mile of straight, smooth, wide pavement. This was no accident.

I had a great time volunteering at Viva Streets. Staying in one place for 3 hours meant that all the interesting people, bikes, dogs, and cats visited me. It was also great to observe a street with car traffic removed. So much quieter and yet more alive.

We hope it’s not ourselves or someone we care about, but we’re all stuck in this dangerous system partly due to decisions that local politicians made

No one has any incentive to reduce car crashes. Car companies sell more cars. Premiums go up on car insurance, a product we are legally required to buy. DOTs get federal $$$ to build unsafe roads. The American consumer gets stuck with the bills and the funerals.

Even if we replaced every car on the road with an electric truck or SUV, we couldn't keep up with the demand for replacement vehicles at a rate of 5 million a year. Or maybe that's their plan. If you reduce crashes, you reduce sales.
