@freiguy @MarinerMuse Because the throw from third to first is actually shorter and you have more time to make the throw (the ball gets to you quicker at 3B) than from the deeper shortstop position. Look at the basic math of a triangle

@MarinerMuse It’s a shorter throw from 3B to first than from short to first. Shortstop plays deeper and has less time to make the throw. This is basic ball knowledge

I think the point is that regardless of who’s playing 3B, it’s a massive, massive upgrade to have Colt playing SS as much as possible

I did a quick search of the transcripts I have with Dan Wilson -- pregame and postgame. I don't have all of them catalogued. He has been asked some version of choosing to use his bench to pinch hit and the overall platoon philosophy at least six times this season. I think there are more. The general response from Wilson has been essentially: These are hard/tough decisions. We trust our guys. We brought them here for this situation.
