In Brazil, a priest named Father João Paulo Araujo Gomes has turned his church into a sanctuary for stray dogs.
He takes abandoned dogs off the streets, feeds them, gives them baths, and brings them to Sunday Mass. Each week, he presents one dog to the congregation, hoping someone will adopt. Many have already found loving homes through his kindness.

On a very personal note, I’ve recently had a brush with a word that no one ever wants to hear — cancer. Thank God, I noticed something & we caught it very early. It’s now been physically excised from my body and the doctor says no further treatment is needed. It looks like I’m going to be okay, God willing. I wasn’t inclined to share this news publicly (especially because the internet can be an insane and unforgiving place), but ultimately decided that making the following plea is worth it: Please, please, please get skin checks. My son Felipe and I on top of Beartooth Highway (Montana/Wyoming) in ’93, a few years after he and his mom came here with just the clothes on their back. He went on to become a 20-year veteran of the Marine Corps because “I want to earn my citizenship,” which he did in spades.
