@RedCircleFP Agree, Darren, having seen many deals, both micro and PE, due diligence is #1. Yes, PE focuses on profit, but that doesn't preclude client care. Many PE firms excel here, and some micro buyers fall short. It's less about the source of ££, more about values and cultural fit

@brianrhill PE can only ever be interested in one thing, money. t is in their DNA. If that aligns with client care its a happy coincidence. As soon as it doesn't money will rule. I've been around a few dozen PE deals, in all industries, to know that is the truth.

Many owner/advisers think selling to a similar/local (micro) firm is their preferred option. When it works, it's great. In many, if not most cases, micro buyers have no idea what they're doing, usually for a lower deal value over a longer time period

@RedCircleFP Having been through countless deals and popped the bonnet on almost 400 firms, that's not my experience. There are many excellent PE backed firms, and more than enough micro buyers I wouldn't trust with my pocket money. Over half of our red book buyers (avoid) are micro

@jayIFA That's why I said, when it works it's great! Sellers have to be extra careful as often the buyer will have little or no experience in buying and integrating a regulated firm

@brianrhill I’d rather sell my small business to another small business with similar values/client experience, even if for less money and more time spent helping with the integration. Clients come first at all times, even when selling up!

@RedCircleFP Absolutely - we use the phrase 'culture before cash' as a prerequisite for every business transfer. You might think you'd be more likely to get that with a micro buyer, but you'd be surprised!

@brianrhill It isn't always about the money though. It's about being able to sleep at night knowing the clients you have worked with for 20 years or more, are part of your family and you are part of theirs, are looked after in the same way you looked after them.
