So after 3 yrs of blood (patient samples), sweat (mostly mine from biking to lab), & tears (almost always of laughter/joy), I successfully defended my PhD yesterday, officially joining the #DoubleDocs club 🥳🥳🥳

@gbosslet Agreed. Should be available to all - including during intern year. Taking 12 weeks during residency though means you can’t go straight into fellowship and have to delay a year (and find a job, etc). Not sure how we address that
English

Graduate Medical Education programs should provide 12 weeks paid family leave
Why in the holy hell haven't we done this yet?
If not us, who?
Let's stop hand-wringing and just do what we know is the right thing

@PanickedFoodie @emedtox I would wonder about myositis. Aldolase, myositis panel, muscle biopsy, thigh MRI to look for edema are all diagnostic considerations.
English

@emedtox Leg weakness came on over the period of a year.
Buzzing, 8 months.
Excruciating thigh pain, few weeks.
Current meds: just tapered off lamictal, colace
Last antibiotic was z-pack Jan 2020
Supps: flintstones multi, 2000 IU D3, natural calm magnesium, B12 500 mcg, b complex

@bhargava_monica And as you know, even if insurance covers POC (which it usually does not), often DME companies don’t have any to give! And liquid O2 is incredible but nearly impossible to get anymore. Creates another level of social isolation, mental health challenges, deconditioning, etc.
English

@bhargava_monica FWIW I very much wanted to do research in this area. It is hugely important and impactful in pts lives! There are also huge barriers to this research due to non-modifiable aspects (disease severity, equipment limitations, etc) Too many to overcome as a junior faculty…

Could not agree more! I imagine one counter argument is the low rate of vaccination in the 5-11yo group (22% fully vaxxed nationwide) but for those of us planning to vaccinate our littles, a few more weeks would have been nice

I don’t understand this sudden urgency to drop mask mandates all over the country. Why now? Literally weeks away from kids under 5 getting vaccinated. While omicron cases are still coming down. Am I missing something?? Make it make sense.
English

@StudentDocIvie Considered your suggestion, decided to change it as I thought it would be simpler in the long run with having kids. We married after M1 year so nothing professionally was attached to my maiden name. I wouldn’t have changed it if I had married later in training
English

Question for married ppl on #medtwitter: Did you change your last name to that of your spouse's or not and why? I know a lot of people keep their maiden name professionally (Dr. X) but use their spouse's name socially/at home (Mrs. Y). I would love to hear folk's opinions/logic!
English

@jdensonMD Cannot come soon enough. You won’t be surprised to know that I completely teared up when I read this today
English

Yes, literally cannot wait for this. My daughter is enrolled in this trial & glad to see it pushing forward, even if it’s unclear how to handle a third dose.
This needs to be available yesterday
The New York Times@nytimes
Breaking News: Pfizer and its partner BioNTech are expected to ask the FDA as soon as Tuesday to authorize its Covid vaccine for children 6 months to 4 years old as a two-dose regimen. nyti.ms/3oALCR9

@MamaDoctorJones My 8yo asked for his nails to be painted once again today! Went with cherry red for the chiefs game. He’s regularly asked to paint them since he was 2-3 and goes to school with them. He’s never told me about negative comments and I haven’t asked - don’t want to give him the idea

@fuzzymittens Chacos are the absolute best for being cute but ALL the walking

@jenniheissel I love (hate?) this! Here is our January CareGame. 0/10 do not recommend

🧵 I’m not sure what I’m about to say has been made clear to ppl w/o a science or #MedTwitter background. It may be a genuine source of confusion (ie good faith questions), so here goes. Many are saying “If #Omicron makes a given person less sick (which appears to be true)…” /1
English

@pjputh Obviously it’s because he’s advocating for everyone to get their third (out fourth if applicable) shot??? 😬

This is the most vulnerable piece I've ever written, sharing the details of my traumatic fellowship experience.
I feared its consequences, but I have a story worth telling & I hope my vulnerability can help others and promote culture change for trainees.
