@kat_boogaard I had a similar thought yesterday when my mechanic charged me $180 to diagnose my car problems. Crazy how he didn't have to do a free consulting session first or numerous rounds of proposals and negotiations. He didn't even apologize when he handed me the invoice!

My plumber: "That'll be $150." Me: "How about this? Instead of money, we'll put a sign above my sink that says you're the one who fixed it. Everybody who comes over will see it. It's called working for exposure and you're going to love it."

@tellcathy @kaitarford Exactly. And the company loved to boast about its amazing benefits & culture, so all us contractors (mostly women, 55+ and/or people of color), would think, “well what about us?!” I left with a bad taste in my mouth.

@brimiers @kaitarford That’s what I figured. Ridiculous. So you get all the negatives of FT employment without any of the benefits.

"This is a 40 hour/week contract position with a rate of $30/hour." Just say you don't pay benefits.

@tellcathy @kaitarford I had a full-time freelance contract like this & mine had 0 paid time off. I had to request any days off far in advance since the team was always swamped, and they always seemed reluctant to approve it.

@kaitarford I also always wonder when I see these if you can take a week off whenever you want or are limited/have to request unpaid vacation time.

@OnlyInBOS I looked at a small 1st-floor condo in Southie years ago that opened up onto an inground pool. It took up the entire back yard. No space to sit or walk around it. It was wild.

St Patrick's Day 1974, my mom was watching her last child free St Patrick's Day Parade in Southie. 2 days later I appeared. I grew up going to the parade and loved it. Now I live on the parade route and go on vacation to escape the craziness that it has become lol

@everycountry197 Yeah, they're all pretty happy & still manage to travel a good amount. I'd be surprised if any traveled long-term again before retirement.

Has anyone ever travelled long term, finished their trip and said “oh that was nice but I’m happy settling for 40 years of corporate life now”? It seems everyone who goes travelling once is itching to go again, and again, and again…

@TheDetourEffect I live in boston but spent this past winter living near Keene, NH. It’s a great college town. Burlington, VT is close to there & has an Amtrak stop.
