Please try reading this text in full Open letter for chess community Vladimir Kramnik January 24, 2026 Now, when we know what really happened in the tragic incident with Daniel Naroditsky, I would like to address the real, much broader issues behind this case. As you all know, the toxicology report published a few days ago suggested the cause of death being incidental heart failure connected with a rare chronic disease of Daniel, causing fatal consequences after the intake of various prohibited performance-enhancing substances. There are strong indications Daniel could be using such enhancers for a prolonged period of time, because of the reasons presented below, and possibly even developed the addiction that contributed to an end of his regrettably short life. This text isnt an attempt to blame and shame, nor does it indicate any personal guilt of him. Many people experience similar problems and it rather deserves understanding and compassion instead of condemnation. But most of all, correct actions in order to help those facing it to overcome this difficult challenge. The worst thing that can be done in such a situation is trying to cover the problem “under the carpet” and hope it would “dissolve” itself somehow. I would not discuss here some rumors but there were enough alarming facts in the past indicating the high probability of the problem Daniel eventually experienced. In an interview on Levitov YouTube channel a couple of years ago he admitted himself being “ludomaniac” (addicted to playing). Although it was said rather lightheartedly, it didn’t sound like a joke, especially knowing the amount of time he spent online playing on and . About a year ago, some Russian chess journalist (don’t tell me it has anything to do with me, he is defaming and attacking me no less than many other “independent chess media”) published an investigation, based on public and data available open source, that revealed some alarming findings presented in public. The period was January 1, 2023, through October 31, 2024, all time controls. For all of these games, the exact start and play times are listed on the platforms, so calculating the total duration of the gameplay is not difficult. Naroditsky played 18,274 !! blitz games with 3+0 or 3+1 time controls during this time Compared to other top players, the gap is simply staggering. His closest rival, Hikaru Nakamura, played "only" 8,194 games. Let's remember Daniel would be commentating various tournaments on top. The author calculated duration of game streaks, meaning consecutive chess games played with a time interval of no more than two hours between them. Two hours is enough to rest a bit, eat, and do other things, but doesn’t allow for a full night's sleep. He presented the table showing the names of all of Daniel's opponents, their FIDE ratings, the number of games, the number of points Daniel scored, and the start time of each mini-match relative to the start of the entire series. Here are most alarming examples: 27 hours session, began around 1:00 AM July 11, 2024, ended around 4:00 AM July 12 Out of 301 games, he scored 63.6% of the points against fairly strong opponents and achieved a FIDE performance rating of 2670 20.7 hours from 10 PM on July 19, 2024, to 7 PM on July 20 Daniel's results on the 15th hour of play are striking: wins in mini-matches against Jospem (4 out of 7) and Nakamura (3 out of 5). And also in the 19th hour: a crushing defeat of Fabiano Caruana (5.5 out of 6) But if the previous examples weren't enough, then hold on... On June 29, 2024, at approximately 7:00 PM Charlotte time, Naroditsky began playing blitz 148 games with a 3+0 time control were played without any major breaks. The last game ended at 10:50 AM on June 30. Then there was a two-hour break, and the games resumed at 12:53 PM. Daniel played another 165 games with a 3+0 time control, two games with a 5+0 time control, and two games with a 10+0 time control. And all this without any significant breaks until 7:20 AM on July 1! In fact, Daniel played blitz all day on June 30, but what did he do during the two-hour break? That same day, Naroditsky was commentating on the ChessKid Youth Championships 2024, a youth chess championship organized by chesscom It means, he played blitz practically all night, then, instead of getting any rest or even sleep, he spent two hours commentating on the youth championship, and immediately after its conclusion, he continued to spar until the next morning! Making it the record 36 hours in a row “streak”... In July 2024, according to this research, Daniel spent about 1/3 (!) of all time of the month playing online. Performing at top 50 level, at times even better. Let's finally stop pretending these insane sessions are physically possible without additional support of your organism, even for a young healthy man, on top considering high level of opposition he faced. All our “chess community” decided to turn their eyes from this alarming report, continuing to express their admiration of Daniel “dedication” and “love of chess” (that was actually true, I believe). The only person who reacted to this publication was Naroditsky himself, who visited a podcast of this Russian speaking “investigator”. In a long friendly conversation in Russian, available on YouTube, Daniel admitted these findings and provided following “explanations” “I find it strange why people do not understand that a grandmaster who loves playing blitz can spend 24 hours playing his favorite game. I dont even notice how time is flying during these sessions” “I just adore chess... I am very resilient... I understand its not healthy... I start getting “second breath” at some point...” “How I manage holding the level (during these long sessions of playing VK) – I dont know how to answer this question. Why should it drop?” Needless to say, this response satisfied the interviewer and the whole “community” My public attempt to point out the evident absurdity of such explanations was routinely marked as personal attack (what else?), and the story was quickly put “under the cover” Even watching some old streams of Daniel (that are still available on YouTube), his unnatural anxiety and lack of sleep is “readable” without any special medical knowledge. Watching some of his stream recordings (after the publication mentioned earlier) more carefully, Daniel would, on top of these old symptoms, on a couple of occasions seemingly appear to behave like being slightly drunk. Now we can presume it arguably could have been something else than alcohol… Unfortunately, on that exact day of the tragedy, all (a couple of hundred) of stream recordings were erased from GM Naroditsky Twitch channel. Why did it happen, who performed this “massacre”, why these recordings were not restored from Twitch archives as a minimum heritage of his memory from people calling themselves being his friends? Hard to find satisfying answers to these questions now Since the established narrative ordered was “Daniel Naroditsky suffering from bullying of the evil Russian” (though I haven’t spoke about Daniel for many months already), the “chess community” decided to stick to this comfortable way to avoid questioning what is really going on. Why do this when there is an established scapegoat, responsible for every problem that occurs, right? After all what matters is, whatever happens, there will be someone to blame... The tragic climax happened on October 18th 2025. Naroditsky started his 17th evening stream visibly tired but speaking and behaving completely adequate. Suddenly, after about 1,5 hours of playing (without leaving the desk nor interruption) he started to act more and more inadequate and atypical for usual Daniel we are used to. The chat, first being surprised, grew increasingly worried each minute. Finally, Peter Giannatos and Oleksandr Bortnyk (who live in the same town) came in person to his house at around 1AM local time. As we can notice, watching this heartbreaking stream recording, they persuaded Daniel to stop the stream (but “allowed” him to play further) Watching the second half of the stream, it is evident ,something is deeply wrong, the speech and behavior of Naroditsky gives an impression of more than simple tiredness or lack of sleep, but strongly suggests influence of certain strong substances We have learned from toxicology report published on January 20, 2026 friends “confiscated approximately 40 pills of probably Adderall” (as if they dont know what exact name of the pills) and... soon after left him alone playing for another 3,5 hours, without calling any medical assistance that was evidently required. I cant blame them humanly for that, since it was a difficult choice at the time, I presume. Of course, they would make something, knowing what happened hours later. But I suspect that logical reason of not calling a doctor was the eventual consequences for Daniel (and maybe some others) of the following test revealing the substances in the blood. Still, staying with him that night or/and the following day would be something expected to do, just in case. Let alone, checking him in person earlier than in forty hours, far too late. But what happened, already happened, no take back option available both in chess and in life. I am sure they didnt forgive themselves easily this mistake, what seems to be (unintentional) negligence that night. Even if on public keep playing “friends who tried best helping”. And I do not want to reproach them for this unfortunate decision. Though, something that deserves a reproach, is the statements after. Mr. Giannatos explicitly insinuated on many occasions my (invented) role in this tragedy in his interviews, being perfectly aware of the circumstances which evidently indicated much higher probability of the following day tragic incident being a direct consicuence of what they saw that night. Only month after, when the smear campaign against me was delivered, he suddenly gave an interview saying “ I do believe whatever happened was either natural or accidental, but not self-inflicted death, if you will... I don't want to get into the details of let's say the environment right other than what I've already said, and I am sure that the official report of his death will come out where experts will be able to provide the exact cause of death, and then people can take what they want from that. But again, to comfort the chess community and provide some insight, I would be shocked if the official report ended up coming out as suicide... having surveyed the environment around him and throughout the home” I would not provide extensive comments on him being silent about it for a month, watching the dirty campaign against me and multiple threats and harassment me and my close family members were receiving, on top even fueling the narrative of direct connection among me and this incident. Its just... In addition, telling in his other interviews that he stayed up to 3AM at the place that night and had a long profound conversation with Daniel about different issues, including- try to guess- you are correct, me. This profound deeply personal conversation happened after Oleksandr Bortnyk left around 2AM (according to Peter Giannatos) in such case should have taken place during Naroditsky intense playing session then, as chesscom data indicates that he started to play again at 2AM and continued for another three plus hours non stop. The chain of tragic coincidences is really inexplicable. Unfortunately, Comet Sponsored online event was starting early morning (that famous recently signed Chesscom partner, which publicly advertised cheating on the platform to win chess games by using the advanced Comet browser). We can only speculate already, but maybe Daniel would recover given enough sleep, but instead, in just five hours he started playing in this high stake event. Hard to exclude a possibility of him taking additional dose of enhancer to be ready to compete with strong players after such a night. Of course, its pure speculation, but rather logical to assume. That would then constitute another insane fatal coincidence. Naroditsky have shown very respectable performance in this event, and right after played another 21 friendly games in addition, that made it another six hours playing session. He lost his last nine games, presumably because of bad physical shape. We can assume Daniel had left this world soon after. I feel its very important to reveal to everyone the circumstances of this tragic case. I am just doing it with intention to make people think about forthcoming points. Something has to change 1 Lately, the chess world became, hmm let me say, heavily influenced by certain forces that provide significant money prizes and established financial links with many prominent figures (including so called “chess media” or “content creators”). And it lost diversity and, in my opinion, lacking healthy counterpowers. Let me be frank and tell another time something others might be afraid to speak out publicly. Behind the narrative of “growing chess”, “attracting sponsors”, “serving the chess audience” there is a clear tendency of controlling the media agenda and dismissing (often factually supported) critics or simply true facts. And/or completely twisting it. The army of raised for the occasion, financially affiliated “influencers” are ready to do the job, “explaining” public what to think. And to chess community figures, what (not) to say. With the visible tendency of “covering under the carpet” all problems and start media attacks on those who doesnt agree with such “army discipline”. I believe that this “new order” is partly responsible for what happened. People seemingly cared more about covering from public eye Daniels problems than, at first, helping him to solve them, even at cost of uncomfortable public exposure I strongly believe, such practice and attitude, established lately in the world of chess, is unhealthy and has to change. I understand you might disagree with me, and have full right to, but no less, no more than I have the right to speak out my mind without having consequences like murder threats, insults, shaming and blaming. 2 I strongly believe that Daniel tragedy must become a turning point in establishing much stricter doping control regulations in chess and all other esport games. I urge FIDE changing their practice of having doping controls once a year at some major event, and think about implementing such tests in a fashion, known in other sports. Such as unexpected tests at home at any moment of time. The world of professional chess have changed significantly during last years. We have lots of tournaments online with significant prizes. A number of professional chess players are playing (and make their living) almost exclusively in chess online competitions. Furthermore, time controls becoming shorter and shorter, making such qualities and speed of your mind and reaction, a big part of the success. Various forbidden enhancers present significant competitive advantage in these circumstances. There is a strong temptation trying to use it. I am young, healthy, everything should be fine... This is a reality we must face, instead of covering this problem, and take measures. If we want fair competition and really care about well being of chess players. Do we?

Arsenal fans have spent the last 3 years consistently calling out every single ref & VAR error. Every single time they do it. They get abused by 99% Liverpool fans telling them to keep their mouths shut. And to get over it and stop blaming refs. Liverpool then finally have 1 singular decision go against them in about 5 years. (Which Arsenal fans also called out) and now all of a sudden everyone has to stick together and back them. YOU are the problem. YOU are the reason refs are shit. Spare us the bullshit.
