Several years ago I was talking to a Priest about prayer. He compared it to an old-school television antenna - where if you point it the right way, you have a good picture. There can be wind and rain outside that disturbs reception - and you have to position things well.
But if you do, you get the message. For Catholics I think this is a good metaphor - if you ‘turn’ the right way, focus clearly - you will be in a receiving mode. That requires clearing the mind, and engaging in prayer as a practice.
I think this holds true for secular ‘meditators’ too. They’re doing more or less the same thing - which is why I never understood why people like Sam Harris claimed that Christians had no historic practice of meditation. They just had a different name. See Meister Eckhardt.

+ blood, heritage, citizenships & our only remaining (after yesterday, too, but for different circumstances - coincidences in life) European home. Ludmila had a huge influence on my life. She will be missed. And remembered. May her soul rest in peace.

To share something personal. My aunt, Ludmila, has passed away yesterday in Rome at age 88. She left USSR in the 1970s. Built from scratch her own successful company in Italy, working in marble and granite extraction and processing business. All on her own efforts and capital. +

The Wire ended 18 yrs ago today. It’s been taught in Ivy League schools, law schools & film schools. David Simon was interviewed by a sitting president about its lasting impact. Cited in a State Supreme Court ruling. Often hailed by critics as the best ever. Never won an Emmy.
