I was losing it the other day over my @spotify account. I wondered what was going on. Ads! I paid not to hear them. But there they were. Was there a problem with my credit card? Nope. Spotify now puts ads on podcasts, whether you pay or not.

@MattCundill @SoundsProfNews @Podnews Would love to know the specific podcast's these people are listening to. Your replies to them are correct that it could be their direct ads or SPAN. I don't envy the headache Spotify has to deal with related to having two different yet similar ad offerings.

Three key slides from @Spotify's Q1 earnings report (beloved by the street, as its market cap went up 16% following the announcement, close to its all-time high) 1. Revenue - consistent quarter-by-quarter growth across both premium and ad-supported segments. 2. Gross margin - a step change in both premium and ad-supported (which swung from negative to positive. This is important because ad-supported had been viewed primarily as a "funnel" towards premium, but now it's gross margin-additive on its own right.) 3. Operating expenses are down quarter-on quarter and year-on year. The combined effect of higher revenue at a higher gross margin and lower expenses = operating income went from a €156m loss to a €168m profit YoY, and they guided €250m in Operating Income for Q2

The question now is who takes the first step in bringing the #podcast industry together and builds trust? Is hard when both sides don’t trust each other to consistently do that industry thing. Not sure we are going to see that… competitive tendencies always win out in the end and that is ok. Is interesting @PodcastMovement Evolutions 2024 is releasing more video of sessions on YouTube this year then ever before. Tom (@webby2001) did you mention @Podnews presentation in the @SoundsProfNews Newsletter? If you did then you have a valid objection around fair play in this area. I think it is ok that each of you don’t cover each other.. would be great if you did though. I believe @SoundsProfNews and @Podnews are competitive in the @podcasting industry and I support the work both of you are doing.
