The warnings of this retired former UK defence attaché in Moscow are still being ignored. Britain's future is dependent on finding honest and trustworthy leaders, uncorrupted by the temptations of wealth, who are willing to confront Russia and the other lethal threats we face.

@FT⁩ letter from retired defence attaché. Early lesson for historians out there

@TorstenBell What is your experience in farming and its costs. Tractor £250,000 Combined Harvester £500,000 Trailers £40,000 Plough £25,000 Seed Drill £72,000 And that's just for a start, so it doesn't take long to get £3 million for a family farm. Asset rich cash poor.

We have to accept that millions of Americans are misogynistic, climate change denying, racist fucking lunatics who don't give a single fuck about anything apart from the price of gas in their tanks. Having done that we need to stop caring about America and build a better Europe.

Opinion | Terrible things will now happen. There’s no point dressing it up, or pretending it’ll be better than it is. We are in serious trouble. We are in a moment of acute danger, the likes of which we’ve never really seen before 🖋️ @IanDunt trib.al/Zfpdntg

Conservative leaders who back Trump should be ashamed. They are abandoning the very values which were once the core of conservatism - betraying the very idea of constitutional government, prudence in policy, and simple decency. And they are also backing a loser...

The Notebook || The embrace of Trump by senior Tory figures shows just how removed the party is from the British electorate, writes @jameschappers in today's Notebook 📓 bit.ly/4fuR0x8

@MilesKing10 @tomrtwit I've read that the valuation of agricultural land by HMRC for IHT purposes is based on agricultural income from that land, so may be considerably lower than what a non farmer might pay for it as an investment, or tax dodge!

@tomrtwit thanks Tom. I think the doubled figure included all farmland, including let land. It's nearly 6x increased.

As the dust settles after yesterday's reforming #budget2024, it's time to look at what the reforms to Agricultural Property Relief (APR) from Inheritance Tax (IHT) actually mean, instead of the toys out of the pram reaction from a section of the farming community. A short 🧵 1/7

The fact that Reeves, at the height of her political power, cannot reverse the “temporary” fuel duty freeze and 5p reduction demonstrates a laughable degree of spinelessness and weakness.

@petedroberts @EllieChowns Disagree. No single tool will fix a complex problem. Areas like yours need more and better on-demand public transport, minibuses & taxis, requiring significant subsidies. Taxes on fuel can provide this and also help to rebalance prices in favour of greener transport options.

£3bn in lost revenue by freezing fuel duty. Again. Meanwhile, 50% fares hike for those using buses, 4.6% increase in rail fares and a paltry £100m for walking & cycling infrastructure. This government is taking us in completely the wrong direction on transport. #Budget2024

@brownyyinseaham @MartinSLewis This only applies to private (defined contribution) pensions where money is invested in a "pot". Public sector pensions, including MPs, don't have a "pot" of money that can be inherited. The pension ends on the death of the spouse or other eligible dependents.

@petedroberts @EllieChowns Absolutely. This ridiculous policy has encouraged too many drivers to buy unnecessarily large vehicles and use them too much, throwing away years of technological innovation designed to reduce fuel consumption. What's your solution for those who don't have cars?

@EllieChowns Are you seriously suggesting that the remote rural residents in your constituency should pay increased fuel charges on cars they are forced to run if they want to work because there is no viable bus service in their area?

@PJTheEconomist Maintaining the cut in fuel duty is profoundly disappointing. Undermines action on climate change by encouraging drivers to buy ever larger cars, throwing away years of technological innovation designed to reduce fuel consumption, as well substantial tax revenue.

For goodness sake. Despite big tax rises overall chancellor has done it again. Fuel duty frozen and "temporary" 5p cut kept. This government is supposed to care about climate change. And I'm willing to bet fiscal numbers assume increases into the future. How much longer?
