It's a really good comparison. Because as much as people want Briere to do something big now after missing out on Carlsson, the worst way to follow this up would be to do a bunch of "big" stupid things, like Holmgren did with Lecavalier and MacDonald.

It's very difficult to sustain Tocchet hockey
Not because it's too hard on the body necessarily, but because players start pushing and making overly aggressive reads as soon as something goes wrong and the WANT to be more aggressive takes over for most

My number 1 criticism may not be that the Flyers didn't tank.
That might be 2 or 3.
Number 1? They feel too good for any movement that isn't acquiring an absolute superstar center or defensemen.
They spent a whole summer in hypothetical discussions about Werenski and Carlsson.

Kaprizov is also Flahr’s ONLY 80+ point player drafted in those 17 seasons.
Only 3 players drafted have 70+ point seasons
He cannot identify high end talent.

But teams that rebuild properly for top-5 picks and avoid reaches for their other 1st round picks don’t need nuclear offer sheets to acquire a 1C.
I’m assuming that’s it for any big swings in the summer of 2026…need the young guys to take a step forward next season.
