Zcash's Perfect Record! Zooko's argument for why Zcash/#ZEC has never been counterfeited and why the public accusation that it was is the opposite of the truth: Zcash implemented a second layer of defense called turnstiles before launch. Moving coins from one shielded pool to another requires publicly revealing the amount moved. This creates a real-time public audit: if more coins ever left a pool than entered it, everyone in the world would know instantly. That has never happened. By contrast, Bitcoin was successfully counterfeited and the blockchain was rolled back to fix it. Stellar was counterfeited. Monero was vulnerable and the Bitcoin fork of its ring signature scheme was exploited. Zcash has a perfect record. Bitcoin Takeover S16E29.

Magic Backup!🧙‍♂️ Zach Herbert/ @zherbert explained why they call it “Magic Backup” and we tested it live. During setup you tap two NFC key cards. Your master seed is split Shamir-style: two shares on the cards, one encrypted share goes to iCloud Keychain via the Envoy app. Everything else (seeds in Vault, 2FA codes, FIDO security keys, Nostr keys, app settings) gets automatically encrypted by the master seed and backed up to @FOUNDATIONdvcs's server as an encrypted blob. We wiped the entire device on stream, re-paired, tapped one card and every single thing came back perfectly. No manual seed entry needed. This feels like the iCloud moment for serious self-custody. Bitcoin Culture Robin Linus's critique of where Bitcoin is heading: the original promise of Bitcoin was self custody, peer to peer money, permissionlessness and privacy. Michael Saylor's triple maxi strategy... leveraging all assets, moving into tax-restricted jurisdictions, and holding Bitcoin through institutions, is almost the exact opposite of this. Robin says that 1% of difference in worldview, between holding your own coins and holding an IOU, is actually 99% of the purpose of Bitcoin. Bitcoin Cash (BCH) came into existence in 2017 after a split from Bitcoin, sparked by heated arguments over how to handle Bitcoin’s growing pains. Bitcoin’s tiny 1MB block size was causing sluggish transactions and skyrocketing fees, turning it into something impractical for grabbing a coffee or sending small payments. Bitcoin Cash tackled this head-on by bumping the block size up to 32MB, paving the way for quicker, cheaper transactions. It’s built to be digital cash you can actually use every day, staying true to the peer-to-peer vision Satoshi Nakamoto laid out in Bitcoin’s original whitepaper, while Bitcoin itself has leaned more into being a store of value, like digital gold. That bigger block size lets Bitcoin Cash handle up to 200 transactions per second, blowing Bitcoin’s measly 7 out of the water. You can see a transaction confirm in seconds, with full settlement in minutes, making it perfect for small purchases or online shopping. Fees? They’re dirt cheap, usually less than a cent, no matter how much you’re sending, unlike Bitcoin’s fees that can jump wildly when the network gets busy. This focus on speed and affordability makes Bitcoin Cash a go-to for merchants and anyone who wants a crypto that feels like actual money. Plus, with a hard cap of 21 million coins, it keeps the same scarcity as Bitcoin. Bitcoin Cash runs on a decentralized network, meaning no bank or government can freeze your funds or tell you what to do with them. It gives you more privacy than swiping a credit card or wiring money, though you’ve got to know your way around to make the most of it. For businesses, it’s a win: super-low fees, no risk of chargebacks, and a chance to pull in customers who prefer paying with crypto. The CashTokens system even opens the door to new possibilities, like creating tokens for other projects. It’s a network that doesn’t ask permission, which resonates with folks who value financial freedom. Still, Bitcoin Cash isn’t without its flaws. Those bigger blocks demand more computing power, which could mean fewer people running nodes and a drift toward centralization over time. Some worry that speeding up transactions might make it less secure than Bitcoin’s slower, battle-tested approach. It also hasn’t caught on as widely as Bitcoin, with fewer places accepting it, which holds it back from being a truly global currency.
