🧵It's hard to imagine the rise of feminism as we know it without the incarnation of the feminist idea into the visible, public token of how women dress. It was Christian high ground that HAD to be captured. The feminist could not proclaim gender sameness and yet dress so differently than a man. It would publicly signify submission to the very ideas she held in defiance. Yet before 1900, public clothing gender statements in our society were made in obedience to the law of God, even by unbelievers. Christianity held dominion over public speech. The difference between the genders was unmistakable in dress. We controlled the culture. When we gave way to the wicked on clothing standards we forsook the law of God as it was handed down from our fathers in its faithful cultural manifestation. The standard they handed down was clear and had been in place for centuries. It was based on God's law. The new standard of clothing sameness came bundled with new theology for the church just as it did for the feminist. We accepted new clothing for women and new understandings of gender roles and family. Culture is religion externalized. Now conservative Christians are fighting to re-establish the dominion of Christian ideas, and clothing is an important part of that fight. It is a loud, clear, public theological proclamation about God, creation and gender. People notice clothing. It is a visible token of Christian dominion or submission to feminism. "A woman must not wear men’s clothing, nor a man wear women’s clothing, for the Lord your God detests anyone who does this." (Deut 22:5) The equity of this law is exactly what it says. It is reflective of God's created order. The question is will we flirt with the edges of God's law like deconstructionists? Or will we embrace the wisdom, goodness and purpose of His standard with all our hearts? Will we recover the inheritance handed down to us by our fathers and adopt it as a powerful public token of Christian instruction and dominion? Talk of other cultures is irrelevant. We are Christian Europeans. Our civilization grew up after Rome fell and settled on pants for men and dresses for women as distinct garments that obeyed God's law. That standard held sway for centuries while Christianity held the public square. Obedience to Deuteronomy 22:5 is a sword of our fathers which beckons us to pick it up and wield it once again. I pray you will recover this tool of Christian cultural dominion beginning in your own marriages and families no matter what the world is doing (2 Cor 6:17).
