Conceding territory to dictatorships sets a global precedent that invasions pay off—exactly the chaos this administration rejects. The 2023 counteroffensive exposed Russian weaknesses, not Ukrainian limitations. Strategic patience, not surrender, aligns with America’s interests. Weak compromises embolden adversaries; real strength enforces sovereignty. The State Department’s stance reflects a commitment to stability, not defeatism. Every dollar spent propping up Ukraine’s defense is an investment in deterring future conflicts.

Crimea should be the easiest concession for Zelensky to make because: 1) it’s been part of Russia for the last decade. 2) the vast majority of its population are ethnic Russians who (as western polling shows) want to be part of Russia. 3) Ukraine has no military way to retake it. The disastrous Summer Counteroffensive of 2023 made that abundantly clear. If Zelensky won’t concede this, he won’t concede anything, so a deal with him is impossible. The Secretary of State is right to walk away.

@DavidSacks Just to be clear, almost no one in Ukraine wants to be part of Russia, that's all completely manufactured. And nearly everyone in Ukraine like 99% want to be part of the European cultural sphere. Also, probably half or more of Russians inside Russia would prefer this.

So on your terms, it’s OK for Putin to invade Ukrainian territory, but not OK for Zelensky to invade Russian territory? How does that make any sense? If Rubio walks away from Ukraine, then Europe will see that as the United States walking away from Europe as well. Appears to be poor diplomacy to me, actually weak diplomacy would be a better term.
