@zalatwicc Going for daily walks. Honestly, it's life-changing. It's one of my non-negotiables in life. Doesn't matter if I was in the middle of my PhD or a new mom, I go for a walk every day.

Out of genuine curiosity- are there fields outside of academia where employees are expected to spend hundreds of their own dollars on parking?

One of the reasons that American colonists opposed the Stamp Act was bc it made their playing cards more expensive. In my dissertation, I wrote about a French woman who owned a paper mill and exported playing cards to the American colonies. Happy belated 4th!

Are you an educator in any field, at any level, who teaches with material objects? I'd love to feature you on 'Teaching With Things," my monthly series with H-Material culture. Get in touch!

Unless you’re descended from pure aristocracy, your female ancestors worked harder than many men do today. Smarten up, you’re not a wilting flower.

Fancy some maths? Helen McGregor worked this multiplication table sampler in Scotland in 1840. Multiplication table samplers were a way for a student to learn both needlework and mathematical skills at the same time

For Twelfth Night I made Twelfth Night buns. Available on the streets of eighteenth-century London for those who could not afford the huge decorated Twelfth Night cakes. Could these be a hit in our bakeries today? Bring back the Twelfth Night bun I say. Who's with me?

A recruiter just sent me an email and although I already have a job I’m tempted to write back and ask why on earth candidates are required to lift 50lbs for a data entry gig.

I also presented a paper at a major conference in my field at ~7.5 months pregnant, so I don't think we're fooling anyone.

@CindyJurie @dieworkwear This reminded me- the Florida legislature literally has a "seersucker day" every session (usually falls in late winter/early spring)

@dieworkwear I grew up in Florida & had never heard that rule until landing in college in DC ages ago. For a Floridian it felt like the silliest of rules but once having lived in places with snow, ice & slush, it made more sense

Like a lot of stuff in classic men's dress, the rule of "no white after Labor Day" is rooted in class dynamics during the early 20th century. Many questions can be answered by "what is the aesthetic?" and "who set the rules?" 🧵
Noah Larsen (박찬우)@nlarjrm319

A question for @dieworkwear: when does the "no white after Labor Day" rule end? Start of a new year? Warmer temps? Something else? Follow-up (or perhaps a prerequisite) question, is that rule still even relevant?
