@cagedthecactus

it's like eating a bit of warm food, hoping it can keep you from starving tonight, knowing it's not enough and you'll die tomorrow anyway.

@xsphi I agree, at this point it is safer to assume that any claim made in an advertisement is false. Snake oil has existed for centuries but it's something about the prevalence of advertising today combined with the lack of consequences for lying

@cagedthecactus it's possible, but this ignores opportunity cost. I'm more likely to find a product (or other type of information/idea) that improves my life doing the counterfactual. if I actually valued finding good products highly, I would be reading consumer reports.

Thought to myself "I wonder what housing in Des Moines, Iowa is like" and went on Zillow and got one shot. I get that these are not the median, and are large houses in a good area, but they are significantly less than what I though $900k would get you in f*cking Iowa

@SophiaNarwitz Reasonable argument to be made that the push for online ID is driven by advertisers wanting proof users are real + highly targeted ads. Not that this makes it any better ofc

I'm sure it's nothing that so many countries & corporations have been pushing Face ID this last year. It's definitely to prove we are human & to keep us & our kids safe. Definitely not a coordinated effort to crack down on the last measly remnants of online freedom/anonymity that we've barely managed to maintain

JUST IN: Reddit CEO says the company is considering requiring Face ID to ensure humanity in order to crack down on AI bots.

@opheliamoding Agree, but I think it's more accurate to say that Fuentes and his followers are one facet of a culture that believes at its core that it's cringe to care, generally, about anything. This dominates much of online discourse and was first popularized through "cringe culture" etc.

@madisontayt_ In America, you pay the restaurant for your food and the server for the service (via the tip.) Tipping in America is not optional or a gift, it's your payment for the service someone provided to you.

tourists in america literally lose what ever moral superiority they pretend to have the MOMENT tipping comes up. you’ll hear classism that would make robert moses blush
FailureFitzFinallyFired@devils1726

@mornings0da @madisontayt_ The fact that the tip part is making every Euro crazy says it all. Always want Americans unquestionably follow their local customs, never want to follow ours. IDK in the end I’d rather be seen as obnoxious than someone who stiffs working class folks who wait on me.

@TheFuriouswc @FrankJavCee Wow, I gotta admit, I have travelled a lot but... I don't think I have ever heard anyone claim Illinois as having good mexican food. I didn't try it anytime I was there because, well why would I?

Hi, I’m still alive. I’ve also put 50,000 miles on the Honda Fit since purchasing it at the end of October. Roughly 4 months of ownership.

the ucsd story was way worse than what i gleaned from the tweets, a whole public education pathway appears to have broken down because it's optimized around not having the appearance of inequity instead of teaching people things

@coolerkdawg @MatthewSpira @KareemRifai Ukraine needs a decisive end to the war. Russia can rebuild and rearm much more quickly than Ukraine during a temporary ceasefire, which any without security guarantees would be. It is better for Ukraine to keep as much pressure on for as long as possible

@MatthewSpira @KareemRifai And Ukraine doesn’t? Last I checked they were continuously retreating over the last year and a half, with Kursk being one notable exception (though that was mostly Russia simply not expecting an offensive there). Check out the deepstate maps and look at the frontline changes.

In 24 hours, the goalpost has moved from "Europe should pay for it" to getting really, really mad when Europe says that they will in fact pay for it. Really obvious what the true agenda here is.

Boeing engineer here. The USB charging system at each passenger seat in a Boeing 737 is designed with a throttling mechanism to prevent overloading the Auxiliary Power Unit (APU), which provides electrical power when the engines are off. Each USB port is integrated into the aircraft’s power distribution network and managed by a smart power controller. This controller monitors the total current draw from all connected devices and limits the output at each port—typically capping it at around 2.1 amps per USB outlet. If the collective demand exceeds a predefined threshold, the system automatically reduces power to individual ports or cycles them to stay within the APU’s capacity, usually around 90 kVA on the ground for the 737 NG series. This ensures the APU isn’t overstressed, maintaining power for critical systems like avionics and lighting while still offering passenger convenience. Hope this helps!

@DannyCepticon @turbo_sloot @POMAHMOBA @nutella__TR There really aren't, unfortunately. This was most of the reason I moved into a house- nobody will rent a garage you can actually work in, probably because they don't want to deal with people's immobile projects when the lease is up.

@thinkcentres These things are such insane bargains. An OptiPlex 9020 SFF runs all my servers. It was free, and the i7-4790S installed in it was also free, separately.
