In October 2023, an Ethiopian woman boarded a flight home from Beirut for the last time after 25 years of working as a housekeeper. A flight attendant guided her to the front of the plane and pulled back a curtain. Standing there in a pilot’s uniform, holding flowers and a cake, was her son. Minalu Mergiya arrived in Lebanon in the late 1990s at 21 years old. She was there through a war in 2006, through an economic collapse, and through the port explosion in 2020 that shook the entire city. She stayed through all of it because her son Kirubel was back home in Addis Ababa with his grandmother, and she had promised herself he would have every opportunity she never did. She saw him once every five years for one month at a time. When Kirubel was old enough, his mum told him her dream of seeing him become a pilot. He trained at the Ethiopian Airlines Aviation Academy and graduated in April 2023 at 20 years old. A few months later, he arranged to fly the exact Beirut to Addis Ababa route his mum was booked on. She hadn’t seen him since 2019. She ran straight into him and didn’t let go. He later said he loved the story the video told, not about him, but about his mother’s journey.

Starmer and Reeves patting each other on the back. Iran hit a British base. Our troops sheltered in their homes, away from windows, taking cover. Greece moved immediately. France moved immediately. Britain wrote a legal opinion. Three days ago this conflict started. Three days of dithering, three days of podiums and press conferences and legal advice. Today helicopters and HMS Dragon are finally being deployed. He has chosen a side. And he had no choice. Because without America, without France, without our western allies, we are exposed. And he knows it. Conservative MP Dame Caroline Dinenage represents Gosport, a naval town whose entire identity is built around our Royal Navy. She stood up in the Commons today and told Rachel Reeves exactly what the country was thinking. You are gaslighting the public over the state of our defences. And she was right. It will take HMS Dragon five to seven days to reach the troops we left unprotected. While Reeves stood at the despatch box claiming the biggest uplift in defence spending since the Cold War. Not for the country that had to watch France and Greece defend what we could not. While all of this is happening our farmers are being taxed off their land. The very people who feed this nation. Meat, milk, vegetables, grain. If this conflict escalates, if supply chains break, if we find ourselves isolated, who feeds us. We learned this in World War Two when this country nearly starved. We swore never again. And now we are destroying the very people who stand between us and that. At the same time we are shutting down our North Sea, closing our gas fields, abandoning our own energy supply. The fuel that keeps our lights on, heats our homes and keeps this country running. We are making ourselves dependent on others for the food we eat and the power we need. Our children will inherit all of it. The debt, the hollowed out military, the empty fields, the abandoned gas fields, a black hole in the finances that nobody will be honest about. You cannot borrow from Peter to pay Paul forever. At some point the bill comes due and it is our children who will pay it. Not the people laughing in that chamber today. The time for change is now. Not for us. For them. This is not left or right. This is right or wrong. For All Of US And in May they want your vote
