non-technical, I just need to vent man.. the events of this week are colored for me by the imminent arrival of my first son. He's a few days late, so we've just been chillin this week and taking a lot of walks for my first 30 years or so, I was ambivalent to the idea of having children. It's difficult, and I was quite dopamine-driven. But past that, the world is unintelligible and scary, how could I force my child to face it? The time I got mugged in the tenderloin, or beat up in LES and nobody helped, broken up with, fired, bullied in school, doesn't sound super fun to put someone you love through (I was a stupid kid, dont feel bad for me) Then covid fucked my life up. my dad died. Kerri and I moved across the country a few times for jobs. All my friends live other places. Stess. Shrinking I was depressed I think, and came out of it by accident (and some therapy): I started getting excited about computers again, and having fun. Expanding during those ZIRP years, money was hella good. I had multiple full time SWE contracts at all times and lived in a nice spot in sf. But I wasn't happy at all and neither was my wife. I cried a lot. I coded 50+ hrs/wk (when u still had to actually write code) and didn't take care of myself. It was ABSOLUTELY NO FUN (other than learning solidity) Fun isn't childish. Fun is life. Fun is how humans learn. Fun is how we become great. Fun is magic. I'm under no illusion about the nature of Fun. There are many people not having a Fun day today. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't And in my mid 30s, having a kid sounds like fun for a few reasons. First, I already love him, and can't wait to play vidya some day (if hes into it)(rip ur base). Second, I know I'm going to learn a lot and become a better person - a new selfish challenge. And finally, what an interesting challenge to train an organic neural network from first principles... What's NOT FUN is accepting the negativity in the world as is, and my impotency in changing it. I WON'T have to tell my boy that bad things happened and I sat there: because I decided I'm going to show up, participate, and keep trying to make the world better for him and everyone But it's not for him or them, it's for me. Because I don't want to go back to shrinking. I'm going to have fun, and live life with the joy of 1000 suns, and be great, and make the world better: just to do it, cause thats who I am and how I want to live. and I'm not sure who my boy will be, but I'm sure he'll be even better🤠 this is the gift he's already given me this week, showing me who I get to be

Do your part to mainstream the Jhanas by submitting an entry into the 2026 Jhana Visualization Competition! Submit your replications of these beautiful states of consciousness for science and a chance to win $1000!
Jonny Miller@jonnym1ller

fwiw: I don't think 'mindfulness' will be the default meditation entry point in five years' time. Jhanas are absurdly more compelling + beneficial for almost everyone (training emotional fluidity, embodiment + unclenching) But I also doubt jhana will go mainstream unless it goes through something of a re-brand. (friends outside of the inner-work echo chamber squint when I say the word and I think 'jh' is unfortunately a barrier) My guess is it will follow a similar trajectory to yoga nidra which @hubermanlab rebranded as NSDR, and it then exploded in popularity Likely there will be some meaningful research on jhanas states → they'll create a scientific technical-sounding acronym like 'BASE' (Bliss Attractor State Emergence), and @jhanatech by then will hopefully have cracked an accessible entry point for teaching jhana-access.

The engineer is the maker of history. The masses are content to be peasants and the rich are content to be feudal lords. The engineer disturbs their perfect peace with his unwanted machines and they collude to suppress him. But the engineer’s machines are not easily suppressed.

What we learned from 3 months of pilots with robotic data companies. Data collection companies want: - to manage their own cloud - more sensors - the ability to write custom code We got rid of the cloud, added wrist cams, will release the first open-source Pi friendly data collection SDK 🛟

Your grandparents had grandparents. They had grandparents. Somewhere back there, someone got on a boat, or didn't. Someone changed their name, or had it changed for them. Someone is buried in a cemetery you've never heard of in a country you've never been to. Most families lose track after two generations. I used AI to push mine back nine. One session with @karpathy's autoresearch pattern: over 100 organized research files. It found a 1940 Norwegian emigrant history with my ancestors in it. Resolved a maiden name question that confused my family for 70 years. Identified relatives no one alive knew existed. The method is simple: set a goal, measure progress, verify against real records, repeat. The AI searches public archives, cross-references birth certificates against cemetery records against church books, and logs everything it finds (and everything it doesn't). Open sourced the whole toolkit. Prompts that do the research for you, archive guides for 20+ countries, starter templates, even a framework for making sense of DNA results. If you have a box of old photos and unanswered questions, this is where to start. github.com/mattprusak/aut…

☄️ BREAKING NEWS! A 7-TON ASTEROID EXPLODED over Northeast Ohio just before 9am 3/17, ripping through the atmosphere at 40,000 mph before detonating with the force of 250 tons of TNT. 💥 NASA says the fireball first appeared 50 miles above Lake Erie near Lorain, blazing a bright streak across the sky before fragmenting 30 miles above Valley City, Ohio in Medina County. The shockwave was strong enough to send booms across the region and even shake houses several counties away. Even more incredible: pieces of this asteroid may now be scattered across Medina County as meteorites. 🪨☄️ 👀 Did YOU see the fireball or hear the explosion this morning? It was visible from Toronto to Chicago to Washington DC. Drop your town in the comments and tell us what you experienced! 📲 SHARE this post so friends across Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Ontario can compare what they saw or heard during this rare cosmic event. The sky literally exploded over Northeast Ohio today!
