Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery

"Misinformation" is mentioned in JAMA Network journal more than 830 times. However, 0 of these articles offer empirical evidence about the effectiveness of countermeasures to address misinformation. Today we published #1. But why was it zero? Social media companies @facebook @tiktok_us @instagram refuse to disclose details and data involving their misinformation countermeasures. What information is targeted? Are these programs working? etc. go unknown. @CommunityNotes w/ @jaybaxter changed that. The novel approach empowers volunteer, independent, anonymous, and ideologically diverse contributors to identify posts containing misinformation and to rectify misinformation by appending informative "notes" to suspect posts. The process is controlled by the public, instead of decision-makers at the company and all information about the program is open-sourced. As a result we, an external team of scientists with no affiliation or relationship with @X could study the system evaluating the subjects, accuracy, and credibility of notes on #COVID19 vaccines. 2/

Since the @WHO declared an #infodemic of misinformation, there have been a lot complaints about misinformation but no solutions. @X's @CommunityNotes may be that solution. During the first year of the program under @elonmusk notes accurately corrected vaccine misinformation 97.5% of the time, citing primary sources of information about half the time and largely credible sources the remainder. Read our study (w/ @mattallen876 @DaveySmithMD @mdredze et al) in @JAMA_current. But let me tell you a little about why we did this study and what it all means, beyond the obvious that more social media companies should follow @X's lead 🧵 1/n jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/…
