🇲🇽 Two CIA officers were killed early Sunday in a vehicle crash in the mountains of Chihuahua state, Mexico, after participating in a raid on a clandestine synthetic drug lab alongside Mexican state officials, according to The Intercept. 👉 Journalist Aída Chávez now reports, citing sources, that the two officers were specifically part of the CIA’s Ground Branch — the agency’s paramilitary arm, which conducts direct action operations. The U.S. Embassy initially described the men only as “embassy personnel supporting Chihuahua state authorities’ efforts to combat cartel operations.” Their CIA affiliation was subsequently confirmed by multiple outlets including AP, The Intercept, and Washington Post. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who has repeatedly stated she will not accept U.S. boots on the ground, said an investigation is underway to determine whether Mexico’s constitution or national security law was violated — since foreign agents require federal authorization to operate in Mexico, and not just state-level approval.
